Apple, part of open source family? You will be disappointed, but no, even if they used a BSD licenced kernel to conceive their system, Mac OS X is closed source.

What did happen to Ubuntu for Android?
Looks like Canonical decided to make their own OS instead of relying on Android.

Anonymous, 04 Jan 2013then why 90% of the desktop PC and laptop users are still s... moreBecause of Bill Gates' innate skill to destroy Microsoft's competition and because there was a long time before real money-making companies started promoting Linux distros as Windows competitors for regular humans, not just techies.
But, regarding smartphones, money was involved since the beginning of the craze, so Linux distros (Android, Ubuntu, Tizen, Meego, Sailfish, etc) were promoted early on and will rule the phone world.

Linoslav, 03 Jan 2013Ubuntu is not "liked" in Linux community because ... moreWho are you calling a grandpa? Listen, Unity broke the conventions. It made life a hell to people who depended on using and managing the system QUICKLY. It also did away with a convention of a taskbar. That is a biggie for big multi-taskers. I was not involved in development of it, and when it came I had to discover it on the fly. Trust me, admins don't like being treated like that by the devs. And users are not getting anything admins don't aprove of.

Also, what was wrong with the GNOME launch menu? It gave very simple, easy, quick and INTUITIVE way of getting around and getting things done.

Have you ever been an admin? Well, I have been one for a time some years back. I've handled machines used by the accounting, devs, the boss and of course the servers. We used a mixture of Windows XP Pro and Ubuntu. And during the time of GNOME 2, things were good. I left the company in the meantime, but my friend still working there told me the boss went ballistic when he showed him unity on a test machine.

Afterwards Mint LTS became the distro of choice there for desktops, with MATE(GNOME 2 fork).

Windows Vista broke many conventions too, and no admin wanted it, and no one wanted windows 2008 without damn good reason.

You see, stability and continuity is very important in production environments. Unity broke that continuity, and it didn't really bring much improvement.

                                        Ubuntu / Unity, Windows 8 / Metro

Nice to play with, hard to live with. In time it will make sense, but while users still have keyboards and tap pads, their should remain two UIs.
