That safe for the environment?

This lens tech is for infrared wavelengths. So, not really for smartphones or ILCs. Most likely for security, and heat surveillance testing in industrial setups.

Anonymous, 29 Jan 2022Pretty sure Apple has this technology since 1980A decade before Apple's even touched the digital camera market? You stupid or?

The problem with camera lenses (I'm talking about real stand alone cameras), even though it is expensive to create the glass, polish it to a lens shape, it's the LABOR and TIME to create, build & test lenses (especially prime lenses) that causes the cost to be expensive.
What smartphones need, it to stop with the multiple lenses on the backs of smartphones, and use one LARGER element with LARGER pixels, instead of stuffing hundreds of thousands of super tiny sensors in a super tiny space. Granted, smartphones do a pretty good job taking photos, it could be a whole different level if they switched to a LARGER lens.

Every company copies. Your prejudice against Samsung is comical.

                                  Not even for own cellphones.

Cool, Panasonic can now make cheaper lenses for the heat detection systems that would work at higher resolutions...
... won't affect conventional lenses, unless they're "chalcogenide lenses"

                                    Nice clickbait, though.
