Alleged Xiaomi 12 mini render surfaces with sub-6 inch AMOLED display

03 February 2022
The chances of this becoming a real device are not great - mini is just not a popular form factor for smartphones.

Cyberchum, 06 Feb 2022"Put the blame on people who constantly say that “no o... moreYou simply forget that there is simply only a tiny amount of smartphones available that are small.
The iPhone Mini is a great example of mini done poorly, it is expensive despite being a dumbed down version of the same thing, on the other and the iPhone SE is small and popular, why? Because it is cheap.
Asus, who outside tech enthusiast ever buy an Asus smartphone ?

People mainly buy what is advised for them to buy, what is trending, what they see in ads, what they have the budget for, and most importantly : what is available.
Let's take example of what is available here in France, without the 4 main carriers, called Orange, Free, SFR and Bouygues, (the 3 others carriers are sub variants of Orange (Sosh), SFR (Red), and Bouygues (B&You)), and all of them except Free even sell Fairphones, yet none sell any Asus.
And carriers are one of the main way people buy their phones.

And it is totally wrong to say that the iPhone mini sold poorly, it still sold more than what entire brands did all phones combined.

Also people who look for small phones, in the non-enthusiast/general population, aren't really into tech, and they are more likely to buy entry phones that cost 100¤ maximum rather than a 600¤ iPhone xx mini who's the base model do better for barely more.

Add to that the fact that the seller will always try to redirect customers toward the more expensive product, and to really kill it, add how when battery capacity is displayed on the phone's sheet, compared to most Android iPhones already have a small battery capacity, but the iPhone mini seems pathetic, and people are really into how long the phone can last before charging it.

You can also add how nowaday bigger numbers are considered as a better option even when it doesn't make any senses (like a 48Mp Wide + 8Mp Uw + 2+2Mp over a 12Mp Wide + 12Mp Uw + 12 Tele because of the 48Mp and of the 4 camera).
And even when the battery is left aside, the smaller resolution of the mini (even if in fact it has a higher pixel density) is seen as a bad thing for non-techies.
And most buyers won't know that it has the same chip as base model, and GPU aside even to the Pro Max, people will always assume the smaller is less powerful despite being 50* more powerful than they'll ever need.
Add the Lidar that also appeared in the iPhone 12 series give another reason other than the Telephoto to not buy the base or mini.

Most buyers are easily influenced, and the mini often appear last among the 4 models, and I've never seen any ads about the mini.
We also shouldn't forget that the mini is new and a different thing, and sometime new things, even when they are good, fail, because people can be reluctant to buy new things.
Had it come with the 11 series, it may have been enough to boost sales, but because it came after the Base, Pro and Pro Max family was established in the 11 series, which after the "X" was the first name users could really understand (the X, XR, XS and X Max wasn't really a friendly thing for non-techies), it makes a big difference, an outsider.

Let's see with the 3 main French carriers how many people rated their 13 series :
Orange : Mini: 71, Base: 274, Pro: 253, Pro Max: 227.
Bouygues : Mini: 74, Base: 322, Pro: 185, Pro Max: 226.
SFR: Mini: 77, Base: 436, Pro: 83, Pro Max: 88.
French Amazon : Mini: 215, Base: 496, Pro: 207, Pro Max: 232.
Yes, this isn't the most scientific method, but the numbers are quite good for the Mini, this is online where you don't have sellers to distract you, it is FAR from a failure or even to sell poorly.
Let's not forget that Apple is one of the biggest company in the world, so even 5% of the overall series 13 is already a big hit, mainly if they didn't intend to sell more, but rather to gather additional sells by attracting new customers.
Apple themselves stated they didn't intend on selling a lot of minis, the only one who say it sold poorly are the news media, not Apple.

And finally, let's not forget that the base model, which sell exceptionally well, IS a small phone in today's market.
Along with the bazillion of cheap, entry level small phones, that are what casuals are looking for but not what enthusiasts are interested in.
Such as those :

Let's also not forget that feature phones are still selling.

All things, considered, people are DEFINITELY buying small phones.

Finally a mini!!!! Been waiting for a proper mini since mi 6

Tred, 03 Feb 2022We like big phones and we are not gonna lieAnd you already have a lot of options, right? At least ~95% of available phones are large, so what exactly are you doing here? To tell us how you prefer large phones when they are actually in surplus supply? Gtfo!

AnonD-909757, 03 Feb 2022When I bought my first proper smartphone, it was the Acer E... more"Put the blame on people who constantly say that “no one want small phones” despite literally everyone that isn't a tech enthusiast and who doesn't have eyesight problems complaining about phones being too big;" Anyone saying that "no one wants small phones" is either exaggerating or simply clueless. I have poor eyesight, but even I still prefer phones in the region of 5.8" - 6.2" (Galaxy S10e - Galaxy S21). Big phones are uncomfortable for me to usage, worse when they're getting heavier too (key reason I went for the Mi 11 Lite 5G). It annoys me that it's quite difficult to find good midrangers below 6.4".

But, there's the reality: small phones DON'T move numbers! They don't sell much. One would be forgiven for expecting someone that falls under the special 5% of the population who know so much about what they're asserting to know that simple fact. The writer even said that right in the article you commented on, or didn't you get to that part?: "Unfortunately, neither one of them is particularly popular." If your assertion is correct—that despite literally everyone that isn't a tech enthusiast and who doesn't have eyesight problems [wishing/asking for small phones]—why aren't the iPhone 13 Mini and Zenfone 8 recording great sales? Why aren't they topping sales charts? Let's excuse the Asus that isn't really a popular brand to start with; iPhones sell in droves, but the iPhone 13 Mini is, from all reports and indications, an outlier, WHY??? Could it be that everyone is a tech enthusiast? I'm one, but would pick would easily pick a "small phone" over large ones. So, what gives? What's even the correlation between preferring a large phone and being a phone enthusiast? I know many people (a lot) that know next to nothing about phones, but still frown at small phones. Maybe it's eyesight, right? But I definitely have poorer sight than the average person, but still don't prefer large phones. Make it make sense, please, because it currently don't!

Reality is that manufacturers are virtually all about the money. They want what would bring in good revenue and keep them away from the red. This is even more true in the smartphone industry that is über-competitive and cutthroat. It's a no-brainer. At least, it should be!

Anonymous, 04 Feb 2022It's seem that you are the one who doesn't unders... moreDon't you realize that smartphones have features MADE for being a MOBILE device, while a tablet is more oriented toward being INSIDE an ecosystem?
Tablet with LTE are NOT meant to replace smartphones and makes calls, only to allow users to get the advantage of 4G coverage and not having to rely on the location's router.

Smartphones have multiple cameras, tablets usually only have one and it isn't the best quality.
Smartphones have dual-band satnav from almost all available sources, tablet aren't made for that so they lack dual-band and many only have GPS.
Smartphones have NFC has a standard feature, tablet don't need to be used for payment and other use like that, they lack it.
                          Etc…
That is because smartphone is a do-it-all pocket computer meant for allowing you to only carry a single thing and yet don't lack for photography, navigation, quality of life, ease of use, etc.
Meanwhile, a tablet is meant for operating in a more specific environment, like in a house or a hotel, or if you work from it, but not as a “do-it-all” thing.
