Having to plug in phone every time you use a car is such a stupid idea, which is why I never ever bothered to even try any of this. Which also makes use of cable redundant. Just use wireless connection for it if you have to. As for old cars with old Android Auto on board, they'll never get this feature anyways, per Android's tradition of leaving you behind. Buy new car, just like you have to buy new phone for pretty much every Android version "update".

My usb cable seems to magicly get fixed when I reboot the phone.
Seems that unplugging the device while in use temporarily breaks the cable until the phone is rebooted

This is actually a really good feature.
They should include this in all products, like on your Android Phone and Android TV, everytime you plug in the charger, Hub, or HDMI it gives you a tick to let you know the connection was established strongly. And if it doesn't meet the criteria, it should display that as well "poor cable quality" and in some instances stop the connection. This is the sort of innovations and improvements I want from software updates, instead of more bloat or Change-for-the-sake-of-Change updates.
...what this would do would be to stop people buying really cheap cables, and stopping eWaste. So those companies will either close down, or they will have to adapt and make their cables safer and higher quality. It is very dangerous now with USB-C (3.0) cables, and the matter is most affecting HDMI 1.4 cables.
