Anonymous, 05 May 2022And yet there are people out there who say that smartphone ... moreA smartphone can indeed replace a laptop - but that smartphone jolly well has to have Windows OS on it. Neither iOS nor Android can be considered a serious OS for serious work, for they are nothing more than lifestyle OSes.

Windows is the beast that outperforms anything else, and until Intel gets it act together to produce an x86 chip capable of outpacing Qualcomm's ARM SoCs on both power draw and performance, smartphones shall remain being a social media consuming gadget.

kek, 05 May 2022You know that's a huge ass lie. Under 500$ Chromebooks... morePreach! Couldn't agree more, especially since we now have Desktop Mode capability on Android. Even a 2019 smartphone with Snapdragon 855 chipset has far more powerful performance than any Chromebook laptop.

Don't even talk about Linux on Chromebook as it's far from truly usable. That is why I always use my Windows laptop for work outside the office. It's so much better than Chromebook in every way.

Anonymous, 05 May 2022And yet there are people out there who say that smartphone ... moreThe harsh reality is that smartphones will NEVER replace laptops. As much as I love Desktop Mode, Android is far from a viable desktop OS replacement. Even though I'm using Samsung DeX from my Note8 all the time, it never replaces my Windows machine. If anything, I'll be upgrading it soon with the latest Intel or AMD CPU.

Luxor, 05 May 2022I see no benefits in using Chromebook. That thing is useles... moreI can totally agree with that. I spent a month using ChromeOS and I cannot see the whole appeal of it. Frankly, I'd rather have a laptop running a proper Linux desktop distro instead.

So... You have to mix PCs and tablets to make Apple even appear in the list. Now that's called cheating, sorry.
And falling chromebooks? I predicted this years ago. At first many people praised them as the future of home PC, but it's been clear all the time that the so much limited system can't compete with Windows and MacOS.

dbjungle, 05 May 2022Gotta love the Microsoft astroturfing here. As far as the ... moreYou know that's a huge ass lie. Under 500$ Chromebooks means Celeron/Pentium options with eMMC memory or a paltry SSD.

For that price, you can pick up a used Thinkpad/Latitude that's in good condition and do more, booting either Linux/Windows, with the extra pro that you are not giving in to Google.

Good luck finding any replacement part for those Chromebooks, since they are made as cheap as possible. We are not in 2010 anymore, even cheap laptops come with SSD these days or you can add one by little money (ADATA SU750 256GB is just 30$)

ChromeOS is just a poor piss attempt by Google to try and conquer the PC market. The difference is that PC market has strong competition, with Windows being almost as free as Linux in terms of development, and Mac being its own thing and offering good value for their users. ChromeOS is just a wannabe Android desktop OS and should get killed ASAP.

I am still using Pixel Slate in 2022. Everything works good and I can do some coding using that Linux container...

great, cause chromebooks are just overpriced and cannot do shit

Arvind7955, 05 May 2022Gaming Laptops are still priced exorbitantly. You can find 165hz FHD/QHD Gsync/freesync gaming laptops with 8 core cpus and rtx 3060's with 1tb m.2 ssds for £1000, you have to pay £1200 for a Samsung s22 ultra or iPhone 13 Pro max with half of what's on offer there. Or buy a "professional grade" laptop like surface Pro and XPS 15 with standard 60hz, colour accurate screens with same or weaker chips, only running integrated graphics for generally £200+ more than that.

I actually like my surface pro very much and it makes perfect sense portability-wise.

Gotta love the Microsoft astroturfing here. As far as the article goes, IMO this seems more like there haven't been any compelling products in the past year. I've wanted to buy both a Chromebook and a ChromeOS / Android tablet, but everything is just a rehash of what's already available on the market. If that's what I was looking for I would have bought it already. I have a wide assortment of devices and a "normal" laptop is what I'm looking for the least at this point. To those who say you can't get any work done on a Chromebook, I suggest you try one. If you're looking to spend $1000 or you want a 15" laptop you probably wouldn't be considering a Chromebook in the first place. Chromebooks outperform the competition amongst small and affordable laptops (let's say under $500).

Gaming Laptops are still priced exorbitantly.

It's interesting to see these statistics that correlate with stay at home culture due to the pandemic. Chromebooks somehow got lucky and had the chance to shine as the starting price point is certainly affordable and are more optimised for weak hardware, an excellent choice made by whoever sponsors these for students. Now that students have to attend F2F classes like normal, no reason there'd be more people buying / upgrading Chromebooks if they already have one that's functioning well.
