of course, the manufacturers do not issue updates in order to force us to buy new phones thats why everybody is stuck with 2,3.. This is ugly.

people jumped on the android band waggon at the gingerbread era, and with network providers locking people into 2 year contracts alot of peole are bound to be using gingerbread...... its common logic in my eyes. if people stick with android then this years contract upgrades will see jellybean and key lime pie increase faster. gingerbread and ics will still be the main versions in use due to these devices being handed down to other people and will be an introduction to android for these people. so next year will see the major shift to the newer android versions! logic!

I dont think its because of market saturation or false marketing strategy . May be its bcos of rapid innovations happening in hardware and software sectors . Even software companies and oems dnt know what they can really do and how far they can go with innovation . Thats why no device is staying top for more than 6 mnths.

Then Key Lime Pie comes, and the cycle starts again, further fragmenting the Android OS, will Google not learn?

i don't think these surveys take into account cyanogenmod 10.1 users. it may look far fetched, but there are too many custom rom users to ignore.

Well, Galaxy Xcover 2 is coming with Jelly Bean, so hopefully most of the low-end phones will soon start selling with JB :-)

GlxyNxs, 06 Feb 2013The answer is simple, manufacturers focus on selling units ... moreI agree with you, from the profit point of view. Besides keeping the numerous models of smartphones, they invent new ones to accommodate higher versions of OS. So yeah, makes everyone want to change a phone every year. LOL. That, is great marketing. (y) LOL.

AnonD-82756, 06 Feb 2013But its still a crap os"But its still a crap os":)))-true, it definitely improved from Gingerbread but my experience with that was terrible, I'm curious how many people using that(Ginger) right now and consider buying a new phone would go again for another Android...

The answer is simple, manufacturers focus on selling units instead of upgrading the existing OS of released phones. If I have functional phone let's say Captivate and I can upgrade that to JB, why bother buy a new phone? So manufacturer have vested interest not to upgrade OS or at least slow down the process to force consumer to buy new phones, and yet consumers don't know if they have to buy or not since smartphones popping out everywhere. It is early to tell, but looks like there are signs that Smartphone market is going to be saturated faster than what happened to laptops and PCs.

More n more budget devices are being launched which come with GB and get stuck on that.

Anonymous, 06 Feb 2013this graph has no sense. you cannot force a gingerbread0-on... moreThe point is to show how many handsets are out there which run these variations. This is directly related to the budget by which people allow themselves to purchase the handset they want and also provides feedback on consumer demand in particular ranges of smartphone offerings. Mid range handsets were widely available with gingerbread for over a year after the flagships received them. Average Joe consumer wont be very knowledgeable in the OS variation, he/she just knows of Android.

this graph has no sense. you cannot force a gingerbread0-only phone to become jellybean. Other low-end phones cannot adopt jellybean.
