I can't believe they're getting rid of end-to-end encryption. Talk about a huge step backwards. That was one of the best things about Duo. It was one of the few, truly end-to-end encrypted video calling options. Well, kiss your privacy goodbye.

This means that Google now holds the encryption keys and can decrypt your calls if they want to. And they will do this. Google is known to be perfectly happy to comply with warrants and other requests from the government and the police. And people are targeted all the time, who have done nothing. Google will probably also start having their servers snoop on your conversations for marketing purposes.

Going by the FAQs, E2E isn't going away. They are planning to retain Duo-style calls with E2E encryption alongside Meet-style meetings with cloud encryption:

      https://support.google.com/duo/answer/12205631?hl=en&ref_topic=12205347
"When communicating in Duo, you can use either:
      - 1:1 and group video calling: The classic Duo end-to-end encrypted experience that involves ringing a number or group directly.
      - Meetings: The ability to create or join a cloud-encrypted Google Meet meeting with a link when you’re ready. Meet meetings happen in the Duo app.
Available features and encryption methods are different between video calling and meetings.
      [...]
Existing video calling features from Google Duo are here to stay."

What's great about having literally HALF of Start menu panel entirely inaccessible, yet because I have so many apps I use regularly, that I need to scroll the upper half constantly to access my other half of apps that could fit on the bottom half of it, but can't because some genius at Microsoft decided you just can't do that? That great part of it? Not to mention you can't group icons anymore like you could with Tiles in Windows 10 to fit more of them in less space. As much as tiles were oversized, you actually had more useful space for them and more control over them.

How many weird iterations of "communication app" has Google gone through so far? I'm pretty sure it's still suppose to be the one and same "Messages" thing, but they've modified and rebranded it so many times I've lost all track of it. It's apparently called "Meet" now. Hm.

How is this news? I swear you guys never cease to amaze me with the high quality articles you pump out...

Why not provide native video call !

How can a company with more user data than any other be so bad at trend based decisions? 😅

I could say that Google has no communication strategy going forwards, but that would be inaccurate. What they have is a tarnished reputation.

Instead of consolidation in their platforms and investing time to get things off the ground, they are more concerned with niche platforms for one thing only, duplicate apps for seemingly different use cases (allo vs meet), and killing off legacy platforms that users had fond memories of (hangouts), not to mention their Google branding always stamped on top means that any negativity gets directly linked to the brand.

Google will never be successful because they are their own worst enemy, and users now have a decade+ of going through it to not trust them anymore. Why would you use Google messaging services when you could use anybody else?

If Google owned Whatsapp, they'd rename it Google Messages (not to be confused with Google Messages, the SMS/RCS app) and then cancel it for some arbitrary reason, just to launch another platform nobody signs up for.
