Anonymous, 01 Sep 2022Samsung and Apple made clear they are againstLike always.
It either Samsung and Apple will withdrawn from EU market or they will make separate devices for EU market and other devices for non EU market.

      Easier to repair you say?

Return the option for removable battery. Number 1 reason that leads most people to buy a new phone (their battery goes dead often and people prefer to avoid the hustle of repairing and buy a new one).

Literally, ever since they sealed them , companies gave them an extra reason to stay stagnant (because now , many, people would upgrade regardless of new features or not). No wonder we get the 3rd (or is 4th) Samsung in a row that is basically the same as before. Companies stopped trying ever since they gave reasons to consumers to upgrade often *regardless*...

YUKI93, 02 Sep 2022Because it's only available in the EU. Simple as that.... moreI also live outside EU, but I managed to find Amazon retailers who can ship it outside EU. I'm still finding way to ship all the spare parts, but I have been really enjoying the whole experience of it. Snapdragon 750G is still more than enough for me and it has HDMI ALT wired video output support, something I haven't seen on an upper-midrange smartphone since the LG Velvet 5G.

K, 03 Sep 2022These companies earn hundreds of billions a year, they can ... morewell, this law is going to be a simple excuse for reducing quality. whatever profit a company makes, it won't be enough. capitalism needs economical growth, otherwise it doesn't work. tesla is a good example. all experts and media praise eletcric cars as environmentally friendly. so people think they have to buy them. as a consequence, tesla can put high prices on its cars, a tesla model 3 costs 50.000€ base price. that is the cheapest model from tesla you can get. so you have to spend so much money to get the most common thing in your life, a car. and then of course, as mentioned above, because e-cars are praised tesla also doesn't need to give premium quality. when you enter a tesla, all you get to see is a tablet and a steering wheel, there is almost nothing else in the car. and the overall build quality of the car is very low. that shows that it is enough to make people believe something is great and they will buy it, you can cheap out everything and they will buy it. and then tesla can also charge a lot for repairs. there is a case with a finnish man who bought a second-hand tesla and some hundreds of kilometers later it stopped working. he wanted to repair it. he was told that it will cost him about 20.000€ to change the battery. after that, he invested that money in blowing up the car.

that is why i fear the smartphone industry will turn into the same thing. prices will raise and quality will drop as companies will be able to excuse it with the new regulations.

"you know dear customer, we have to change the build of the phones to make repairability better. for this veeery expeeeensive move (😏), we have to raise prices. and because the very evil eu comission wants us to offer additional things like chargers, repair kits etc you will have to pay for those things additionally... what? you don't agree with higher prices? well, if your phone becomes more durable we will have to raise prices once more, as we will sell less phones. whatever argument you find, we will always have an excuse, you see?"

Anonymous, 02 Sep 2022Bundled chargers and headphones were most of the time great... morethey were all pretty bad especially for what you can get today for as much as 3$ (e.g qkz ak6)

maybe exception; AKG x Samsung, but they were still pretty eh

They ought to force manufacturers to at least reach current state of the art 1600 cycles to 80% for the batteries, otherwise by the time their current proposal gets implemented it will be out dated. And a minimum of 5y system updates ought to be mandated too.

Anonymous, 02 Sep 2022if they do this, then smartphones will be crap. smartphone ... moreThese companies earn hundreds of billions a year, they can easily absorb the costs. When all other manufacturers like cars, appliances...provide parts and services why should companies like apple and samsung be exempt?

I'm talking purely out of real life experience. I can count on one hand how many of the people I know or have met in years had problems other than what I mentioned earlier.

I don't mind more spare parts, I guess it's 'the more the merrier' case. I just pointed out a middle ground.

One more reason - I can choose better accessories than the bundled one. Much more better. So why would more e-waste be produced?

blue, 02 Sep 2022I wonder why nobody buys the amazing Fairphone...Because it's only available in the EU. Simple as that. There has been continuous demand for the phone to be sold outside EU, but Fairphone still has no plan for it.

Anonymous, 02 Sep 2022Bundled chargers and headphones were most of the time great... moreEverybody, who tested the phones. Except some rare models all manufacturers bundled the cheapest and worst headphones possible. Anything was better than bundled crap. The same was and still is with chargers. Cheap, slow, useless.

I have another idea! Why don't they propose a single packaging? You know, a package that apart from the device, includes a charger, a cable, a case etc. Because, you buy a phone and then you buy various stuff, every one with its own factory packaging, a courier packaging, extra deliveries and all sorts of things that harm the environment. Then, as charging technology progresses, maybe an old charger should be replaced by a new one, or maybe the cable doesn't support faster charging, let's buy a new one. It would be awesome to buy a phone, open the package and find in there everything you need! Oh, wait...
