I say the photos should be compared best to best so 4mp to 8mp Because that iss the whole point to see which phone takes the best photo.

Why would you upscale a picture for comparison... Upscaling picture degrades the value of the pixel, and might actually destroy some of the detail.
Downsizing the 8mp would have been a better comparison.

The point of the 'ultrapixels' is that you can reduce the number of pixels because each pixel is larger. The 8MP camera in the iPhone 5 uses 1.4 micron pixels and the 4MP camera in the HTC uses 2 micron pixels. Theoretcially, the HTC should let in the same amount of light (if not more) while greatly reducing the noise due to gaps between the pixels. The fact that even the 1.6MP downsied images were terrible shows that it's a massive fail by HTC!

I'm curious to see what real world photos will look like with HTC's novel approach...I'm sold on the Zoe editing features...this was the thing that had me interesting in Blackberry's new camera.

This was a silly shootout. Of course the iPhone will resolve details better than the One in bright light. It has twice the MP...duh. The One's approach isn't about hi-res details. A 4MP pic is great at 8x10" prints. You talk about blowing up the prints to the iPhone's native print resolution of having an almost 4 foot wide print?! Really? Anyone printing that large is not taking the picture with a phone...I promise you that. In order to test out HTC's promotion, this test should have focused on exposure in a variety of situations. This is what I've been crawling the web to find out. I could care less about zooming in to read the "made in China" stamped into someone's jewelry! I want to know if I am going to get more/better snapshots than my old phone!

Two companies with best cameras are Nokia and ... morewe'll just have to wait and see after the reviews how good this camera is but honestly, what could someone expect from an 1/3" sensor with slashed resolution to 4MP(just to market it as ultrapixel camera)?, the most annoying thing is, since you mentioned 808, that HTC mocked Nokia before presenting One and showed a photography history as if they invented cameras. Since this wasn't enough they made a phone looking like the result of Apple/BB/Sony partying to much and running an OS similar in looks to WP8...quietly HowToCopy brilliant

I am kind of suprised that htc is a year behind iphone 5 camera. Since htc claimed their one x is ready to replace single lens reflex.( http://blog.htc.com/2012/08/professional-photographer-challenges-htc-one-x/) and now new one is way better than one x. We can deduce they'v already outdone iphone 5 since long time ago.
htc dont have their own camera technolgy or other hardware stuff.
all they can do is do much market hype about their products.
when companies like nokia and sony are putting lots of efforts and money to try to push the physics limits, htc just mock them and deceive users in their sales promotions.
why htc choose to use
less pixels camera but without beating up iphone 5 or nokia or sony? because they have no choice, they don't have nothing technology to beat them up.
besides they like to cost down and tell people they are the most innovative company.
by the way, ultapixels is from omnivision.

Indeed, now I see HTC One photos are indeed having much more details than the iPhone 5. Hope to see photos comparisons again Nokia 920. I know 920 able to take good low light conditions photos (but very noisy in fact), but day photos are not really that excellent. Would hope to see these comparisons though.

the HTC One shoots 16:9 photos natively - in order to compare them with the 4:3 IPhone photos CNET switched to that mode on the HTC, cropping the images to a merely 3MP. So now it is 8MP vs (upscaled) 3MP! They could also switched to the 16:9 format on the IPhone making it essentialy a 6MP camera - much closer to the 4MP of the HTC One.
Whether you prefer 4:3 or 16:9 is personal taste, but (nearly) all computer/phone/tv screens use a 16:9 ratio, so this format makes much more sense to use!

Not close to what i had expected, i wonder why they bothered with making a new sensor and stuff,
the sensor on one x was brilliant and could just be improved and possibly be swapped with a upgraded version or something, :(
