Ok, it seems under-spec'ed and over-priced. But if Sony think £1400 is a reasonable price for their flagship, then the 5 is their mid-range and the 10 is their idea of entry-level price. Everything's expensive in Japan ?

5G is the one that causes me regular headaches. Let's look at the XQ-BC62 (North America 1 III) NR bands in the spec sheet: 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 8, 20, 28, 38, 40, 41, 66, 71, 77, 78
Only bands 1, 3, 7, 8, 28, 78 have SA (stand-alone) 5G enabled. Sony never got certification for NR 77 and NR 78 so they are disabled. The remaining SA 5G bands are not active in North America.
Long-range NR 71 is, by far, the most common 5G band but it's SA 5G. Sony phones will show 5 bars of "5G" indicator because that signal always exists, even though the phone can't use it.
As far as I can tell, the only 5G that sometimes works is the urban booster NR 41. I say sometimes because it may also disable all cellular connectivity due to some kind of bug.
LTE isn't great either. The phone likes to use LTE 66 + NR 71 for T-Mobile. LTE 66 is a mid-range band that's a bit spotty and it's not meant to be used alone. Every time LTE 66 drops, the phone is dead with NR 71 that it can't use. Without SA 5G, the correct combo for would have been LTE 66 + LTE 12.
Why is the SA/NSA setting backwards? Nobody knows. One can only suspect that Sony hates people.
The phone has been crap traveling too. It has the right bands in the spec sheet but won't work with the carriers. I have to bring my old phone with me.
LineageOS is finally ready for Xperia 1 III series. It's been a very long wait for a phone with a properly working OS.

Indeed a disappointment. They could’ve at least given it the previous gen’s features. The only difference is the bigger size which is a step backwards. Maybe it could foreshadow the absence of the xperia 5v. Which is a shame as well. This phone didnt need to exist to make everyone suffer.
