The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5 will be able to run Google Maps on its cover display

22 June 2023
The larger 3.4" (up from 1.9") cover display will allow the new Flip to graduate from simple widgets to running proper apps when closed.

Anonymous, 23 Jun 2023Moto uses P( )oLED, which definitely isn't on par with... moreNot really they are both similar, p stands for plastic and samsung also need plastic to make there display suitable for folding so not much difference, just name.

The flip4 has a mode which allows you to use any app you want on the cover screen... This is just showing an app specially made for the cover screen.. considering most apps auto scale it seems kinda pointless when you can just use the full map app on the cover screen.

I'm hoping they improve the battery life of this phone, battery was useless on previous models and if they are having a larger cover screen they need a vast improvement to back it up.

notafanboy, 22 Jun 2023How is that useful? Some people don't want to open their phones just to access basic things.

Anonymous, 22 Jun 2023I wonder if iPhone can do that???When Apple does it:

Anonymous, 23 Jun 2023Oh yeah, and Motorola came with a bigger and better screen ... more144hz is useless. There's no diff from 120hz and it consumes more battery life.

good news for functionality. however; fragile inner screen, short battery life and unable to be opened with one hand will be still problems for flip series. there were so many black bar problems in flip4 inner screens. these kept me away from flip4.

JLC, 22 Jun 2023Sometime. I just wonder about the tech sites. Anyone that ... moreuncommon display resolution might have display(UI) issue, as apps adaptive layout usually using common aspect ratio
                        https://developer.android.com/guide/topics/large-screens/support-different-screen-sizes?hl=en

                        this 3.4” 720 x 748px will likely scale to 1:1 aspect ratio
but the folder like display cut out might cause some issue, say like if the apps using/placing bottom-right button (like messaging apps) which is in cut-out part and also when rotated

Sometime. I just wonder about the tech sites.
Anyone that knows just a bit about One UI and Samsung would know that the outer screen will provide the same functionality as the outer screen of Fold and the same goes of course for the inner screen. This includes two different home screen configurations, as well as AOD and the rest.
And it is clear that any, really any application would run on the outer screen as good or as bad as it already runs in any pop-up window of the same size under One UI.

notafanboy, 22 Jun 2023How is that useful? It would be useful if I could pin a very frequent route (like commute, that I check every single day) on the outer screen... and then show me te usual bus times just like on the regular app. I think it would be cool

I think of a good few apps more practical to use on a cover display-music, wallet, alarm, task/reminders.....

I've dropped by F3 in submerged water so now extremely grateful of the ip rating
I think once this is in my hand I will prefer it to the Motorola
The front oled is still massive compared to the Razr regardless
The boxed-off sides look less slippery too

What's the use of this. I just don't get it. Yes, I would like a cycling computer with a smaller screen that's harder to see and therefore more distracting while navigating. Great idea 😆

You can already do this on the previous Z Flips using SamSprung and CoverScreen OS. I don't want to use only Google apps from the cover display, Samsung! I'm not getting the Razr+ or Z Flip5. The Razr+ is not much different than my Razr 5G I already own and looks worse. Z Flip5 is ugly. I want the Pixel Fold. No compromise with the cameras.

Typing from a cover display is going to be a problem. An onscreen phone keyboard is shaped like a square. The Razr+'s and Z Flip5's cover displays are shaped like a square. The keyboard will take up most of the screen real estate that you can't see what you are typing. Razr also forces us to use only GBoard. And not all apps are optimized to be viewed from a square.

                                        How is that useful?
