Micron unveils its UFS 4.0 storage tech, it's twice as fast as previous-gen storage

22 June 2023
It comes in 256GB, 512GB and 1TB capacities and offers up to 5,300 MBps/4,000 MBps sequential read/write speeds.

128 GB phone storage variant can comes up with UFS 4.1 or higher. The phone processor (CPU) is mainly based on the UFS version specified by the phone manufacturer. For example mediatek Helio G99 supports maximum target of UFS 2.2 even if you're using a varient of 128gb or 256 gb storage phones. The UFS cannot be upgrade or edit for a phone in his entire lifespan as it is set by the phone manufacturer. If you purchase a phone with latest UFS version you might need to purchase flagship level phones (USD $500 or above money). Get a latest UFS version isn't necessary I mean it slightly improves the phone technology but still it isn't noticable to some people for those who are using older UFS versions. If you received 256 gb storage variant or 128 gb storage variant if you didn't got UFS4 it means your phones overall specifications or CPU isn't compatible with the latest UFS model. It is considered you should know the phone specifications documents clearly when you purchase a phone with latest specifications so that you don't get panicked, confused, overthinking and scam after coming to home. (Also the bigger storage capacity or latest technology used means more better and positive aspects of a phone).

yalim, 24 Jun 2023Midranger chipsets don't support ufs4 0. Besides upc... moreSnapdragon 8 Gen 3 will allegedly support UFS 4.1 storage, though it's not been confirmed yet. UFS 4.1 won't be drastically better read & write speeds than UFS 4.0, it will be slightly better. The much bigger jump won't come until the further future with UFS 5.0.

Anyway currently UFS 4.0 storage is already super fast. it's very close to CFexpress Type C cards speed which professional photographers use in digital cameras for memory hungry Raw photos. Jpeg photos in phones are much smaller file size so UFS 4.0 is more than enough.

Ps. Snapdragon might be bringing UFS 4.0 storage to their top 2024 midrange processor. Which is a good thing for consumers.

S, 25 Jun 2023I don't understand what most people do with more stora... moreMost people these days use their phones to regularly take photos and videos, it all adds up especially videos which eat into a lot of storage space!

Even 128GB storage will get used up fairly quickly by most people with photos, videos, music, games, apps. Plus the regular app updates and software updates that also use up storage.

Personally myself I would never use cloud storage for personal things like photos and videos of myself, family, friends. Different for stuff like music etc if you run out of space. UFS 4.0 is great for phones super fast internal storage, high 512GB and 1TB on some phones.

I'm more curious about IOPS than sequencial speeds. With all the bloat in Android, that's gonna make more of a difference in how responsive the system feels years down the line.

I don't understand what most people do with more storage in any mobile device?
Using cloud for storage is more efficient as per my view.

I use mobile storage for capturing and keeping files that are important, needed close to daily etc.
Other files is stored on cloud both important and non important.
I also have separate storage disks like sd card, portable ssd to keep most important files.
In mobile i don't storage more than 64 GB.
In pc i don't need more than 1 TB.
In SD card i need around 128 GB and portable SSD 1 TB is fine as i can get new ones easily if i needed more storage.

Anonymous, 23 Jun 2023That's sarcastic question, right? 😂😂Not really. Most production laptops are heavy, have terrible battery and are too much to carry around.

upcomimg s8g3 which, will power 90% of 2024 flagships will be using ufs 4.1. So,this is a dead product. No company will buy this. Maybe 2024 huawei flagships may buy it with their 2023 SoC. That's all.

So micron can keep it 's chip memory in store until UFS 5.0 being introduce.
