justasmile, 07 Jul 2023It's a really good phone ruined by terrible software. The biggest gripe of all existing Tecno, Infinix users is they do not provide major Android software upgrades on their phones. But what we miss by complaining so is the manufacturer can now keep the phone prices low while providing better hardware for same price.

Software development is expensive. Making it perfect with great optimization on the OS level, camera software and in having almost zero bugs costs even more during software testing cycle.

I own their first flagship, Tecno Phantom X which still runs on Android 11 from the day it was launched 2 years back, the stability and optimization of the software in truly noteworthy. Everything works as intended while providing great user experience. Great optimization between hardware and software leds to excellent battery life on this phone even with a hot headed, power hungry SoC like Helio G95. Inbuilt camera app works like charm, shoot great photos & videos by providing excellent cohesion between image sensors and G95's ISP.

Tecno's HiOS 8.0 Android overlay over Android 11 can be found on Phantom X, with huge customization options. I like most of them but some are of no use. The other thing I noted is there is hardly any 3rd party bloatware pre-installed. Hence no unwanted notifications. On other hand it comes with many 1st party softwares from Tecno itself. You can uninstall or disable most of them. The end result is you get a more cleaner user experience than any Realme device. I own the Realme X7 Max running Android 13 and it is a pain. With every X7 Max updates, the phone is slow, camera app has gone down the drain in terms of picture quality.

In the end we have to make a choice in software strategy while buying any mid range phone. First there is this group which provides good hardware for its price. For them, either we go with phones which will receive un-optimized major Android updates in future with tons of bloatware (Realme, Poco) or a very optimized and stable phone with no planned major Android updates. I prefer to go with the later as for me user experience counts above all. And there is this second group who will provide sub-par hardware with highly optimized software with promise for major Android updates. Look no further than Samsung, Vivo etc.

In terms security, Tecno is providing bi-monthly Android security patches to Phantom X, mine is running June, 2023 security patch. Same goes for my Infinix Note 11s and Tecno Camon 20 Pro. In the end, I must admit, I was pleasantly surprised with my purchase of Tecno Phantom X. For the price I paid ₹13.3K($160), the phone exceeded all my expectations by providing unparalleled user experience which I will cherish in years to come.

I maybe wrong but it seems from this year they have changed the policy and introducing major Android updates.

you have to suffer, 10 Jul 2023it is dull when brand new. it needs time to color calibrate it.Well this is a budget AMOLED display which tries to provide a lot of specs and for me succeeds in most.

The positives are a large 6.67 inch display, FullHD+, 120Hz refresh, HDR10+ certified, plenty bright and vibrant 10-bit AMOLED panel for multimedia consumption. We have Widevine L1 certification here, so HD contents from OTT platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video can be viewed with ease. Also the display comes with very high 1920Hz PMW so almost no strain or eye fatigue. Touch response is good. Another benefit of having the powerful Dimensity 8050 SoC onboard is, which playing 4K videos on Youtube it does not stutter, which is often the case for other budget devices.

On the negatives, I wish in pitch dark the display could go even lower in terms of brightness like 1 or 2 nits. And yes the default color setting tend to be more bluish which can be rectified from the display settings. I think we simply cannot ask anything more form the display considering the price the phone is offered.

Comparing Camon 20 Pro's display quality with say my Tecno Phantom X will be unjust. Phantom X is more expensive phone, hence the display color quality, infinite contrast and color calibration is much superior.

However if I have to rate between my Camon 20 Pro and Tecno Phantom X, I will rate the later higher due to superior user experience. Performance wise though 20 Pro is better of the two.

you have to suffer, 08 Jul 2023camon 20 pro 5g has the same chip as 20 premier. After owning the Tecno Camon 20 Pro for few days, I am pleasantly surprised with the amount of hardware and more than expected user experience it is able to deliver for its mere asking price. In a word AWESOME. And that too from a not so well recognized brand like Tecno in India.

Just a week before I got their last year's flagship, the Phantom X from Amazon, at half its normal price. At just ₹13.3K($160). Great device with flagship built quality at this price. They were providing unreal exchange prices which were just too hard to resist. For my nine year old Motorola Moto G (2014) no one was even ready to shell out a dime. But here I got an exchange value of ₹7.45K($80). So I had the Phantom X at a heartbeat.

As such I was not ready to invest on any new phone for now, but the offer price of Tecno Camon 20 Pro on Amazon was just even more unreal. So had to get one for my wife. Hence I got the 8/128GB variant of Camon 20 Pro. This phone normally sells for ₹20K($240) in India. This time I exchanged my wife's nine year old Motorola Moto G (2014) and got an even better exchange value of ₹8.45K($100). After adding additional ₹2K($25) flat discount on any card it all came down to ₹9.55K($115). This is an unreal price for such a device, you see these deals once in a blue moon.

Considering the Camon 20 Pro was launched just two months back on 27th May 2023 in India, it comes with latest specs from top to bottom. On the exterior the phone comes with a boxy design having a very unique sky blue coloured vegan leather back. The polygon shaped camera bump is a very unique design which I have never seen before. The phone as a whole makes a very attention grabbing statement in terms of bold design and comes with unique aesthetics which is unseen in this price category. I heard it has own some design awards too. I don't like the chrome coloured glossy plastic sides though, they are fingerprint magnet.

On the front you are greeted with a gorgeous 6.67 inch, FullHD+, 120Hz refresh, HDR10 certified, 10-bit AMOLED panel which is just made for multimedia consumption. It is plenty bright at near 1000 nits, has under display fingerprint scanner and comes with very narrow bezels. It makes the phone look very modern and premium. Also it has with an amazing 1920Hz PMW so almost no strain or eye fatigue. It is the most amazing display you get under $150. It is same display you get in much more expensive Techo Camon 20 Premier. Full marks to Tecno for design and display.

The phone comes with the best SoC you can ever get under ₹20K($240). I am talking about the Mediatek Dimensity 8050 based of TSMC 6nm fabrication process. This SoC is a direct descendent of Dimensity 1200 so it just blows all previous SoCs available in this price segment out of the water in terms of pure performance when coupled with 8GB LPDDR4X RAM. Everything you try just glides as feels butter smooth in operation. I am not a heavy gamer though.

On connectivity front, its supports 10 5G bands. All 5G bands in India are supported and this is also a proper dual 5G SIM phone. I tested 5G connectivity with JIO, no issues. It has support for WiFi 6 and NFC. I do not use NFC now but it may become handy later. It also has support for memory card expansion which is a huge bonus.

On audio front too it has everything covered. DTS certified dual stereo speakers which are loud. The GOD sent 3.5mm HiRes certified audio jack is also present. I am yet to speak about its camera performance which is one of the best you can get for this price. On the software, battery, charging and camera front, I will write more on my next post.

Remember, Camon 20 Premier and Camon 20 Pro are the same phone. Tecno sell 20 Premier for ₹30K($360) with a slightly better camera and faster charging while omitting the very important microSD card slot and the audio jack. Everything else are identical. Camon 20 Pro is just better value for money.

In short I don't know if Tecno is doing some kind of media stunt, but at the price of ₹9.55K($115) just grab Camon 20 Pro while you can by exchanging with any 10 year old near dead phone and in having $100 slashed off from its asking price.

Tecno should remove adwares from their UI & make it neat and clean. Bug fixes should be done in time as Samsung does. They should clearly state its Android upgrades and security updates policy for each device. Unfortunately these are not the priorities of Transsion, the parent company of Tecno, Infinix and Itel. 👎
