09 August 2023
It doesn't tell when the tool would be available, though.

Pixels and Xiaomis are really the only viable options when it comes to custom ROM support. Pixels are the easiest, as no unlocking tool or waiting period are required.

AnonD-454049, 09 Aug 2023xiaomi making you wait for a while is okay. The worst part ... moreMaking you wait is never okay. It bars people from doing what they want to do with their devices, and even if Xiaomi's is for a short while, that's still unacceptable, especially if someone who intended to unlock their bootloader bought a new phone on its release date. Seriously, it should be illegal to stop companies from disallowing you to unlock the bootloader and enable root. If I buy a phone or a tablet, I *must* have the right to do what I want to do with it.

The worst part is being unable to use qualcomm edl mode if you brick your phone. It asks for authentication that only xiaomi service centres and independent repair shops can provide and they charge you a lot for it. Oneplus allows one to freely use edl mode yourself.

That's a suspicious answer. I will believe it once i see the unlocking tool with my eyes.

same vibe as oppo saying in public they will not leave europe, but they do everything to leave in the background and weeks later, they eventually do it.

Well, I want to remind people about some broken promises from companies, like HMD, were they promised something and never delivered.

This is probably the same case.

hey, I'm using ZRE ZR01 (Rakuten big) & it stuck on Android 10 ,never received any OS update,if anybody else using this device or know of any possibility to install custom rom , mention it here.

Not releasing the unlocking tool is same as not allowing bootloader unlocking Asus. Bye I have put you on the list of blacklisted phones. Only considering Google Pixel phones now & in future just waiting for them to up their game in the charging speed department not 2hrs waiting for damn phone to charge, 30min 1-100% will be ideal maybe in Pixel 10 pro. Asus blacklisted just like OnePlus no longer development friendly Only Google Pixels from now on. Xiaomi they make you beg to unlock the bootloader a phone you have bought with your own money $1k+ hell no 🤬

They'll get GamerNexus'd by Louis Rossman again for sure.

Doing so will limit the freedom of choice from the smartphone market.

The last ever resort is to having no phone at all, just using brainwaves to communicate.

Kangal, 09 Aug 2023That's an empty promise. It only takes hours to code ... moreI'm not aware of the legal/administrative review procedures in the EU, but I would think that ALL OEMS (not just Apple) would try to challenge this. We already see how few Android OEMs provide the kernel source code that they are already required to do, why would this new hypothetical requirement be any different? Best case: This further segments the software into EU, NA, and rest of world variants; worst case: nothing changes in any meaningful way.

For something like a bootloader you REALLY need to check if everything works, because if it doesnt, youre screwed. So its validation and whatever too

Sounds like damage control to me 🙄

                                      That's an empty promise.
It only takes hours to code such an unlocking tool, so they can push it out today if they wanted. The fact that they haven't done this yesterday, today, nor tomorrow is proof enough for me to discount it's arrival.

Ideally, we would get the EU to make a law that all electronic devices can get "admin access" (aka root), hence bootloaders should come locked with an option to be unlocked. Additionally doing so doesn't void the warranty. Warranty is only voided for misuse of device, not manufacturing defects. This could cause fragmentation as the EU Variants would be more desirable, and fetch higher prices internationally. Regardless it could breathe life back into the Custom ROMs scene for Android, and it may birth the start of more elaborate jailbreaks for iOS Devices.

TL:DR - Sorry folks, bootloader is locked (as it should be) and to unlock it, it won't come. It's not coming. If you make enough noise it might come. But there is nothing concrete and no plans to do so today. A future law can help make things better for consumers.
