The company might even require longer software support for the devices.

Inflation only plays a part of it, rest is companies wanting more money (companies means everyone in the chain of making stuff, not only the one at the end of it)

Anyhow, when flagships went for 500 euro, that would be now 730 euro with inflation.

Yet we are way past €1000 for a while now.

Anonymous, 13 Aug 2023Phones aren't the only products whose prices are incre... moreDon’t use inflation as a excuse, I work in the food sector and just like with tech, most of the “inflation” is not even real.

Inflation is real, inflation plays a part, but often companies become greedy and use the situation the world is in to get more money, with the excuse of “inflation”.

Not so long ago pandemic was the excuse, and just like in the tech sector, in the food sector it did play a way smaller role, than companies claimed it did.

Because they could use it as a universal excuse for everything.

So no, saying prices went up because of inflation is just a small part of the story, by far it is greed and that’s a issue in every sector out there.

blue, 13 Aug 2023Yeah, I remember those days too. Average salary was less th... moreHow high salary was depends heavily where you live.

When Apple and Samsung their flagships were under €500, minimum wage in my country was just under €1300 (gross) a month.

            It’s now nearly €1900 (gross) a month, wouldn’t say that’s double that.

And again it depends on the country, but now same flagship phones are much more here, we went from €500 for a flagship, to ~€1000 (launch prices) for a regular S23 or iPhone, up to €1300+ for a S23 Ultra or a iPhone Pro model.

And I mean few years ago you could get a mid ranger and be happy too, but nowdays even midrangers got too expensive for what they actually provide, so forget that too.

blue, 13 Aug 2023Yeah, I remember those days too. Average salary was less th... moreAnd today's twice powerful smartphones are still miserable . Chrome tab still scary . In India our govt has turned all formal job into contractual job and halved the salary . The country with largest population. So speak for yourself.

Well you can have even unlimited ammount of OS and Security updatzes but your hardware wont keep up with apps and games that long.
After 3 years or so several games will be ddifficult to run or editing 4K or 8K photos and videos on any midranger or budget phone would be impossible,
So having lots of updates guarantee nothing extra.
After 10 years if your device will be still working it will be ggood only for calls and texts and maybe brownsing no other apps will works properly.

Anonymous, 13 Aug 2023Hey Google, if device longevity homely is a top priority fo... moreIt doesn't exactly work like that right now. Lots of Arm processors, and a good number of mobile components, have only proprietary drivers. Plus mainline linux can't meaningfully support all of the different bootloaders for current android devices. The bootloader is very different between devices. It is nothing like desktop, there is no standard for device enumeration. All of Android is built on the hardware abstraction layer.

Extremely sad times are coming, I miss the days a flagship was €500, but we can all thank people that accept and keep buying expensive phones from all brands.

No exceptions, all smartphone brands are guilty of current smartphone pricing.

The hinge durability and OS support is not the real issue.

The folding screen it’s durability is, even if you literally babysit it and handle with utmost care.

They forgot about the most important requirement: down-to-earth pricing.
