Anonymous, 28 Aug 2023Are Google going to release android 14 to other manufacture... moreAFAIK, the last time phone manufacturers launched the newest version of Android out of the box before Google Pixel series was the OnePlus 7T series that launched with Android 10 out of the box. After Android 10, there were no more phone manufacturers launched with the newest Android version first before Google Pixel. The nearest (but even that, it still launched after Pixel 5 was introduced) was the OnePlus 8T, and that was the last of its kind. Android 11 was first launched in Pixel 5/4a 5G, Android 12 with Pixel 6 series, and Android 13 with Pixel 7 series.

Bonus: The last Sony phone to launch the newest Android version out of the box before Google Pixel was the XZ3 with Android 9.0 Pie in 2018.

Too bad they put it in a rectangle form factor with a FE mount and call it "Alpha ILCE". There are countless missives about how awful Sony's auto mode is, and I have plenty of out-of-focus quick shots on my Xperia 5 II. I would honestly love to be able to set the default aperture to f/11 and never have an unfocused shot again. Other manufacturers, meanwhile, take Sony hardware and deliver a truly stunning camera experience (Huawei, Oppo, Nexus/Pixel up to 5, Apple, Vivo). If the Sony was _that good_, it would top DXO despite any bias. One look at GSM's own photo comparison is enough to reveal the Sony focus method cannot capture fine detail at the same degree as peer cameras. Hell, in the good lighting comparison, the Zenfone 8 has better surface texture detail than any phone from the Xperia lineup."

I don't trust DXO and have heard there's plenty of bias. I look at multiple reviews online, not just GSMarena, DXO, Phone Arena, etc. The videos I see from Photography channels have praised the Xperia's AF performance and how it locks onto the subject. Check out "The Art of Photography" or a more tech YouTuber like JuanBagnell or "Somegadgetguy" where he does tests and exposes how these other brands cheat their way to record longer footage for videos.

I'm not claiming Sony's auto mode on their phones is good, that's something they definitely need to work on because for an average user, it's not that good. iPhone and Pixels are better for this.

"Display is a gimme. Anyone following Xperia 5 closely knows the green/purple line and screen tint problems, although screen tint was in the software. The 5 displays, by resolution alone, are probably better than the 1 for any content other than 4k since 1080p content is 1:1 displayed while the 1 uses a square of 9 'display pixels' to display a 2x2 region of 'content pixels'."

It's not really a gimmick when there is an increase in resolution. With the way OLED displays use the pentile matrix on phones, it's not actually the resolution displayed. The Xperia 1, 5 and every other phone that uses Samsung's OLED displays are guilty of this. It just looks like it's sharper than it is because of how it's arranged with the 2 green subpixels.

It's not a substantial increase, but it's still something regardless.

"the very, truly weak flashlight (weakest on the market)"

I do agree with this, while I don't really use flash for photography, it would be better if it had a brighter flash.

"Sony's battery life in the 5 II was average at best. The device cannot go two days without charge under basic usage. Charge every day. Get nervous around 20% and change your usage, which happens at least a few nights a week. Unless this had a significant bump over the last two generations (and the 5 III looked nearly identical to the 5 II on paper) I would still expect having to adapt your lifestyle to your phone's battery."

A lot of factors go into battery life, but the Xperia's battery life isn't bad. They an excellent way to preserve battery life such as H.S power control which they made since the Xperia 1 ii. I hope they switch to newer panels so they can further increase the battery life, but for the type of display it has, the battery isn't bad.

"Let's move on to HORRENDOUS SOFTWARE SUPPORT. Less than two years (because the release schedule isn't aligned with Android's) of OS updates."

I agree with you, but Sony's mobile division isn't a focus for them. They don't put enough money into device support. I definitely think they can improve this and should because Sharp has good support despite being smaller than Sony. I'm not gonna address the AOSP thing because I don't care about that and won't be suggesting that.

"Further, Sony drives the headphone jack from the SD codec. There's nothing special about their driver/amp despite having access to some of the most iconic pro audio and consumer audio products/circuitry of the last century. Hell, even screenprinting "Walkman" on the side would get a few extra buyers simply out of '90s nostalgia. Meanwhile, LG was running an ESS SABRE, the same you'd find in a $500 audio interface capable of driving 80- or 250-ohm cans."

Another thing I agree with you.

"Fix the flashlight. Offer 3 or 4 years of OS updates (or just long enough to get us past the atrocity that is Material 3). Fix auto mode. Make a screen that won't glitch within two years. Ditch Qi unless that's really what the market is asking for. Get a better selfie camera. Fix or remove the awful haptic audio. Keep the good construction, Alpha support, watertightness, and a decent fingerprint sensor. For bonus points, add "glove mode" (extra sensitive for detecting touches through nonconductive fabric) and "rain mode" (i.e., no random keypresses when you get so disappointed by your phone purchase that you spill a single teardrop onto the back button)"

I agree with most of your points except the fingerprint scanner. It's already fine the way it is, just fix the issues that it has right now. The selfie camera can be improved, but there's only so much that can be done with the bezels it has. The design should not be compromised, it's fine the way it is. It's got a design language that is unique to Xperia, it's identity.

Hell, in the good lighting comparison, the Zenfone 8 has better surface texture detail than any phone from the Xperia lineup.

I would concede that the Native Alpha connectivity is really nice, but that's probably Stockholm Syndrome from the Alpha apps sucking so bad on a non-Xperia phone. (Try to connect, need to open the camera's temporary wifi connection, switch to network settings, click connect, switch back to app, connection dialog closed because focus was lost, default wifi autoconnects, reopen connection dialog, repeat cycle until hair is pulled from scalp or a dirty workaround is found.)

Display is a gimme. Anyone following Xperia 5 closely knows the green/purple line and screen tint problems, although screen tint was in the software. The 5 displays, by resolution alone, are probably better than the 1 for any content other than 4k since 1080p content is 1:1 displayed while the 1 uses a square of 9 'display pixels' to display a 2x2 region of 'content pixels'. The 5 screens weren't particularly bright in daylight, but they were brighter than the very, truly weak flashlight (weakest on the market), which Sony fanboys are quick to defend as an "illuminator" which has super special light scattering properties for a soft and consistent photo finish (ignoring the fact that the ACTUAL CAMERA FLASH, the part of the illuminator used for taking beautiful photos, is brighter than the quote-unquote illuminator).

Sony's battery life in the 5 II was average at best. The device cannot go two days without charge under basic usage. Charge every day. Get nervous around 20% and change your usage, which happens at least a few nights a week. Unless this had a significant bump over the last two generations (and the 5 III looked nearly identical to the 5 II on paper) I would still expect having to adapt your lifestyle to your phone's battery.

Let's move on to HORRENDOUS SOFTWARE SUPPORT. Less than two years (because the release schedule isn't aligned with Android's) of OS updates. Fanboys tell me you can "just" install AOSP. It's unclear whether the stock camera drivers are retained or replaced, and good luck getting all of your banking/stock apps to run without complaint. (Some detect root.) Whatever your defense for this point is, think about whether Apple or Samsung or Fairphone is currently offering a much better support horizon.

Further, Sony drives the headphone jack from the SD codec. There's nothing special about their driver/amp despite having access to some of the most iconic pro audio and consumer audio products/circuitry of the last century. Hell, even screenprinting "Walkman" on the side would get a few extra buyers simply out of '90s nostalgia. Meanwhile, LG was running an ESS SABRE, the same you'd find in a $500 audio interface capable of driving 80- or 250-ohm cans.

It's gotten so bad that the mere existence of any headphone jack, good or meh, differentiates them from the pack. Honestly, I'd rather get a cellphone with great overall specs and add an external headphone driver.

Speakers are good but not better than the rest. Fingerprint sensor was good for me (not always for others) but never better than the rest. Selfie cam was installed and definitely not better than the rest, but "nO cUtOuT" amirite??.

Overheating was a problem until the 1 V, which is evidently (from the leaked promo) a different beast than this 5 V.

Honestly, I would not buy a phone without a telephoto for 20 bucks, and I also dislike 7" phones, which is why I passed on a Zenfone 9 or 10 and any of the actual class-leading handsets to wait for a 5 V with 3 cameras. Now that it's here, 2 cameras is a massive disappointment, and only a full-blown technical revolution in imaging sensors---such as 48 MP with 90% of those pixels concentrated in the center (aka how real eyeballs work) so that zoom CAN function well without an extra optical element---would get me to buy this (frankly uglier) new device.

Anyone actually listening to the critics knows the Xperia series has advantages and multiple, honest, detectable disadvantages. You might say "only for pros", and I hear "only for patient users willing to deal with bullcrap that is often absent in competing products".

Fix the flashlight. > Better cameras: Sony has one of the best AF on their cameras. Are we talking auto processing or actual camera capabilities because Sony phones can still produce some of the best photos out a smartphone. If you're referring to auto mode, then I would agree with you.

Sony removing the telephoto camera should mean a lower price vs 5 IV. Like at least $100 cheaper. They should as not lowering it would cause a massive backlash even from the fans IMO.

As much as I want for this brand to succeed (among the sea of Android Chinese brands and Samsung), they're really making it a hard sell for the common people. Higher price vs the competition, very limited availability, and that obsolete software update policy.

Oh well, here's to me hoping that Sharp goes global for their smartphones I guess.
