Why did they remove the notification LED, LTPO, telephoto and not add ToF and IPS?

Biggest disappointment is that this $1000+ phone only has 128GB of internal storage. This may not be enough for all the grey goo apps and OS stuff a few years down the line, even with a MicroSD slot for media files.

This is gonna be a hot take, but if there was no extra cost, I'd take 1TB internal storage only over 128GB internal + MicroSD slot.

What kind of professional applications are done with smartphone camera? The ones which rely on instant moments not the jobs where you have plenty of time to fiddle with adjustments. Those professional jobs in arts will always be using dedicated cameras with large telescopic lens and mount stands, to eliminate vibrations and perfect focus.

Anonymous, 01 Sep 2023Sure, there's only the Realme 9 Pro+, Zenfones 9 and 1... moreNot practical. The whole point of a microSD card is that it's always accessible. Don't say cloud storage because some places don't have service, cloud storage is slower anyways, and I don't want to pay an arm and a leg for the service, and the mobile service to access it. Sorry, but paying 100$ a month for that is not practical.

So knowing that your recommendation of carrying a dongle DAC and SSD are completely ridiculous, let's see which of your recommendations actually fit the bill.

Oh look, it's all like my original statements were correct in saying that Xperia is the only brand of phones that fit my needs :)

It's almost like the consumer knows what they need best, and internet trolls shouldn't try to convince them they don't need those things. Hello, I've been using an LG V60 which has expandable storage and a headphone jack for a year, I think I'd know by now if I didn't value those features, both of which I use every single day.

Anonymous, 02 Sep 2023> ready to make a shot in ANY moment. (Xperia user)... moreYou must feel so creatively liberated, having pointed phone at thing and pressed button. You surely must be a talented photographer to be able to accomplish that. No, here's how this would actually go down on a Sony phone:

                1. Press shutter button.
                2. Adjust a few settings, because you're a competent enough photographer to always leave your camera in the best settings for current conditions.
                3. Press shutter again.
                4. Edit RAW file in Lightroom and marvel at the incredible dynamic range achieved by using RAW files.
                5. Send photo to grandma and laugh when she asks when you got a professional camera.

Sorry mate, but if you can't get a good picture with an Xperia, that's on you.

Jim, 02 Sep 2023Who TF wants to carry around a separate DAC and a separate ... moreZenfone---a capable phone for less cash---is on that list with its headphone jack, and you don't need an SSD everywhere. You walk around all day with a toothbrush in your pocket?

Just keep your SSD on your desk at home and every so often back up your content. The photo kiosk at Walgreens doesn't care if you plug in SD or USB, so being able to pop out the SD at a moment's notice only matters if you're smuggling photos out of North Korea. Are you honestly packing 100 GB of photos and video onto your phone every day with an army of flash cards from Costco ready to archive your memories? Are you married to the SD specification? USB-C will give you roughly the same transfer speed as SD (and under many conditions, faster, because many of the SD guarantees are extremely conservative and amortized, and the SD landscape is full of grey market and resold cards---read Bunnie's post about MicroSD problems)

It's fine that you're gonna buy this phone. I am not, because the Xperia team has nerfed the last two generations of Xperia 5 without significantly downgrading the price, and Sony will continue feature cutting until their mobile division is bankrupt or only creates cookie cutter smartphones anymore. My Zenfone 8 and a6400 get the job done together, and if I break this phone before something decent and currently supported (sorry Xperia 5 III, not buying a used phone already past its support horizon) I'll just switch back to my LG V40 which has a built-in DAC.

Where is your current dream phone's notification LED? Charger and/or cable in the box? Periscope telephoto? Regular telephoto even? Macro mode? 256 GB storage? 12/16 GB RAM? VRR? OIS on the second shooter? Variable focal length on the selfie camera? A color option that isn't synonymous with YAWN? Force-able night mode? A flashlight that actually keeps you safe at night?

Meanwhile, Apple is about to release a phone that checks practically all of these boxes (except no wild color because "titanium" and no in-package charging brick) for an extra cost of ... oh, pretty much the same price and size as the 5 V. Plus, Apple isn't burdening you with having to give mid-grade bundle headphones to someone you like but not *that* much. If you were going to use QC45s or WH/WF-1000XMwhatevers like plenty of people in this phone's target demographic, the jack didn't matter anyway.

Glad you found a substandard phone to satisfy your needs and drain your wallet.

                              -----

This is the photography process every "auto mode bad" Xperia fanboy defends, and what every other phone manufacturer seems to have gotten "closer to correct" at this price point.

Also, what's the deal with releasing a $1000 phone when its big brother is $1100 (and will probably be under $1000 itself by the time the 5 V _actually_ ships)

Maybe because it's way more practical to use your phone as we carry our phones EVERYWHERE. Some even go ti toilet with it. That means they are ready to make a shot in ANY moment.

It's really not that hard to critisize Sony Xperia when we talking about prices. They are indeed expensive and they've always been, not just with their phones.
