When it comes to innovate and enrich the platform google has never really innovated themselves. They watched what OEM's did with the custom launchers and took (here and there) some features to add them (often in a poor way) to the stock android version. With the pixel phones they did indeed innovate somewhat with pixel exclusive feature of which some are really good. Still, when it comes to software stability and support google is not the best in class and this bold claim of support still needs to be verified in the future. The fact that they already dropped the feature drops on the each first Monday as they did in the past, is an indication that it's not that evident to ensure the promises they made. No I have not owned a pixel phone but I have someone close to me that has one so I pretty well know how thing go with pixel devices (especially what does't go well and the not so great after-sales/warranty experience). Also, it's only with the 7a that I became interested in purchasing one (because it's seems to be a nice one and good value for money and because it's finally a little bit more easy to get one where I live). In the past I wanted to get me a 5a 5G device but it was simply not practical to buy one so that effort went nowhere.

How is a mobile phone going to blow you a way?

All those drivers are closed source blobs and especially back before Android 6 when HALs were not a thing. Things like camera becomes flaky and loses functionality like burst shots and speaker phones not working were common. Nowadays with GSI, you can load any OS image on top of the OEM kernel and it would mostly work. But getting it to boot up and run apps and calling it usable retaining all its original functionality like stylus support are completely different levels.

I don’t want a phone for 7 years. I want a phone that blows me away now.

The 7 years service with average specs suits a Samsung A14 or something not the $2000 flagship crowd.

As long as there's an unlocked bootloader, anyone can do it. There's even an official LineageOS build for the F(x)tec Pro1 QWERTY keyboard smartphone, and I don't remember it being popular. There are more popular phones that never get any custom ROM support because of the locked bootloader.

There are people who forget that Android belongs to Google, do you speak as if the system were from another company or are you one of those who believe that Android is from Samsung? hahaha... Google is the absolute owner of Android and they can do whatever they want with it... I do believe that they are also going to fulfill those who last 7 years with the same phone, there being so many varieties, prices, offers

Google does Google things, odd. Not sure why anyone on the pixel 6 or earlier would opt for the 8 pro over the 7 pro bar essentially a thermometer or they really want the flat screen
I purchased the 7 pro new a few weeks ago heavily discounted and it's the best phone I've ever had but wouldn't have even considered it if it weren't for the sales and Google have gone bumped up their prices again? Here in au the 8pro is virtually the same price as the iPhone 15 pro series...sheesh, sorry Google but at these prices your new phones are gonna sit on their shelves

I stick to my opinion that this "promise" is nothing more than a marketing lie. First they need to fix the basics, being selling devices that aren't buggy from start with hard and software issues, especially when the asking price is not low (agreed it's lower than iPhones that also aren't able or not willing to launch and sell devices that have the same issues). Secondly, make sure you can live up to the promise of the regular software updates (major, feature and security ones) and not come back to earlier promises. If you can't honor a promise, then don't make it. Thirdly, claiming to offer software updates and hardware availability for that amount of years is not going to happen, besides on paper. You need to ask yourself how much it would cost you to repair/upgrade your tightly glued together devices. Everyone is laughing at Fairphone bur actually it's only their method of making stuff that would allow that kind of support while staying economically viable from a customer point of view. The "trend" of self reparability is only possible for the brave people when it comes to a classic design, meaning all glued together and a shitload of different screws (types and sizes). With a phone like a Fairphone it's only one screwdriver you need and some methodic approach when tackling a repair. So please just do as Motorola and don't make promises when you cannot honor them or act upon these promises and thus not only fancy words. Another thing, for some devices like foldable ones, the hinge and screen would most probably not survive for more than 3-4 years...it will be fun to replace hardware such as hinges and especially the flexible screens. Then of course you have the Apple approach where "self-repair" is only possible in a very limited way where you risk of having functionalities not working anymore because it has not been done by a licensed repair service or because the repair didn't happen with genuine parts (while sometimes they are) just because Apple want to steal even more money from you for expensive repairs where the cost would almost be the same as buying a new one (which is what they want).
Don't get me wrong, I'm not against the trend of sustainability and prolonged support but only when the brand commits to it or even adapt it's business model to not just selling as much as possible but of course that would not make the "investors" happy if they would not get their fat bonuses (without having to work for it) and the CEO's would also fulminate if their disgusting salaries and bonusses would be a lot less.

rizki1, 06 Oct 2023even though the Fairphone is longer, don't compare it ... moreI don't think people who buy Fairphone care about software trickery. Frankly, all they care about is repairability and upgradability, that's all. But since Fairphone is always sold with an unlocked bootloader, it's not the end of the world, as there's always the custom ROM community to go for.

It's great to see the Fairphone's hugely positive impact on smartphone repairability and sustainability in the current smartphone industry. Unfortunately, neither Fairphone nor Google Pixel are officially available in my country, so I'm afraid I'll be sticking to Samsung's Galaxy XCover line for now.
