Weekly poll: the OnePlus Open is here, who is buying one?

22 October 2023
While there are plenty of foldables in China, most brands lack the global reach of OnePlus, which has left the North American and European markets pretty bare.

Foldables are inreresting, but im not yet ready to jump in the bandwagon. Ill wait 3 to 5 more years.
Im not sure if its asking too much but my considerations are at least battery life of s23U, no heating issues, and good cameras (not exactly best).
I believe build quality by then is already good.

We ain't buying a foldable until they can fix the screen protector to not peel off too easily.

My answer to the poll would be "I don't want ANY foldable at all" but there was no such option.

Foldables are the 3DTV of mobile tech. They're a fragile, oversized, underfeatured, pointless gimmick.

I have no use for a gigantic phone when closed that unfolds into a tablet with a super fragile display.
Specially when they lack a bunch of basic features too (expandable storage, headphone jack) AND add to that garbage cameras, a plastic screen (no, that inner screen isn't actual glass, despite the marketing attempts at mixing glass particles into the plastic) and a super thick body without a massive battery to justify it. And all for 2000€?
      Yeah. Dream on, OEMs.

Consumers have spoken already. There's no real demand or interest in foldables. Specially when they're all the same crap (the Find N and Find N2 were on an interesting path but Oppo ruined everything with the Find N3 by making it just another oversized pair of slabs like everything else).

I wont, I would rather buy an used car at that price.

Personally I'm warming up to the idea of a foldable, especially for productivity. Carrying a phone and a table is getting old. Condensing that into one device is getting more attractive. The only thing holding me back is reliability. I don't want to pay for such an expensive device that will require screen replacement within a year. So far, even Samsung's track record is not good, and OnePlus' is a lot worse (with review units already getting dead pixels). If this were a $500/$600 device, one can turn a blind eye. But this is a $1700 device.

If I must have a foldable, for $100 more, I prefer to stick with Samsung. At least Samsung has a better track record in software support.

I've used the galaxy fold 2 as my daily driver for 3 years now, and it's still going strong. Surprisingly, the most durable phone I've ever had. I'm getting this purely for the change of pace. I can't imagine ever going back to a "normal" format.

Foldables will only get popular if it's the only option to get when getting an Android device the way large phones became the only option for consumers. Or it becomes popular when Apple decides to release one. It's been 4 years and it's still very niche and may remain niche for the next 4 years.

With Google promising 7 years worth of software updates, it means you can keep a phone for a good 8-10 years. Only need to upgrade once a decade. This means foldable may never take off since the upgrade cycles are longer and more people will be content using the same smartphone for longer than 5-7 years.

This happened to video game consoles. We used to upgrade to another console every 5 years or so. Now it's turning to 7. I still don't own a PS5 and have no urge to get one. My PS4 slim is from 2017 and I'm content with a console that came out 10 years ago. Smartphones will become like appliances lasting a decade.

The fad of wanting to buy a new phone every 1-3 years is dying out. This is why I don't pay attention to MKBHD or Michael Fisher anymore. Save your money. You're only using it to surf the web, watch YouTube, stream movies or TV shows, or social media. Buying another phone is only for ego and fending off boredom.

I'm not interested in foldables. At all. But it must be said that the OnePlus Open/Oppo Find N3 is the best, most appealing foldable so far, mainly because it doesn't have a neutered camera system. If someone is looking to buy a foldable phone, this is the one to get!

Dont trust the quality in foldable phones yet. But sure i want it.

What a joke. Until horizontal foldibales will cost 1k euros at launch nobody will give a fuck about them. People will just wait until this piece of garbage get below 1k or nobody will get it anyway.

It's right up there with the Honor Magic V2. Both are great foldables with no major flaws, but this one's camera is probably even better as well. For me, the most important part of a phone is its cameras, so this foldable is definitely for me.

There should've been an option "i don't want foldables (in general)". I think a lot of people would relate.

I don't think there is a lot of interest for foldables yet
