Google Photos for Android now backs up all RAW images automatically

21 October 2023
The existing RAW photos won't be automatically uploaded.

This really frustrates me how Google decides things for me .... Cannot choose back up only photos and skip videos, cannot turn off hdr in photos ... Such a basic function someone would think.

magnaroader, 23 Oct 2023"Most" VS majority of the world that isn't ... moreAgreed, also MicroSD cards become handy for those who use several Android phones as well as phone collectors, to read data from removable media.
There are others who record FM radio for later listening, and most FM radio channels in third world countries haven't been added to online services yet, where a MicroSD comes handy to record from a feature phone and move files to the main smartphone, which I prefer to do as a Nokia 8, Samsung Galaxy J3 and Nokia C1-01 user.
Sure, they can get corrupt easily from misuse, but being cautious while using technology is a must imho. And patience isn't something difficult to master

that's why i do not use google photos app.
disable it/ force stop & remove permissions, or uninstall the full app using usb debugging tool.

use terabox or any other cloud app where u can manually udpate photos or file as per ur own requirement. (as none of the cloud apps are safe... anyway)

for gallery app, use simple gallery app, its free and very useful....

"When you click a RAW photo, a JPEG version is also captured and uploaded automatically to Google Photos. That's not ideal if you take a lot of pictures in RAW since RAW files are larger than JPEG and could fill up your Google One storage quickly."

These two statements are contradictory. The first one said the JPEG is uploaded to Google automatically, and then the second one claims RAW will fill up Google One faster. Which one is it, RAW or JPEG?

AFIAK Google photo back up has always been "high quality" by default which means even JPEG is compressed from the original JPEG. So uploading compressed JPEG is non-news.

I've been using this useless thing until recently. Then I realized there is a lie and that is uploading pictures in their original quality.

When Xiaomi even ditched microSD on their popular Redmi Note series, it tells you where we are heading. You can dislike it, but doesn't change the facts and market.

Netflix, Spotify, and YouTube can download offline files to microSD cards, and I always do it all the time. I always download Netflix and YouTube videos for offline use in either 720p or 1080p, and the size taken for each download really shows it. Same with Spotify, as I only download songs in HQ settings. It becomes more apparent if you listen to music in FLAC/WAV format.

Well any user have around 15GB disk space for google back up data for free after that google wants them to pay.
This will fills up said 15GB disk space a lot faster so they can accumulate lot more money.
                                    What a shame of google.

And since many people in developing markets already rely on cellular for their internet, they actually are more open to streaming. Spotify and YouTube are how most people enjoy music nowadays, and most people don't have such huge collection to begin with. Majority are simply listening to the current popular or viral playlists.

Like it or not, It's the reality of the market today. Storage are cheap that even cheap phones can have 256GB internal storage. The only company that still makes you think storage is expensive is just Apple

magnaroader, 23 Oct 2023"Most" VS majority of the world that isn't ... moreBack then when low end phones are stuck with 16 or 32GB at best, sure. But today, if you actually go out and update yourself on the current market instead of just few pirates around you, that's not the case anymore. Lay consumers don't like SD cards. They're slow and get corrupted easily. They have their photos in there and when they upgrade, they found out it's corrupted. With cheap phones now having even 128GB or more, consumers around the world are shifting. That's why even cheap lineup like the Redmi Note 13 doesn't have SD card slot anymore.

Like I said, only pirates care about SD slot to jampack their pirated ROMs and movies. For the normal people, even 128GB is plentiful and most are not even using it fully.
