I like the way the pictures look in Zeiss natural mode, sick of overly vivid pictures, but I guess to each their own.

DarlingYext, 03 Nov 2023"Vivo is great at taking photos in good conditions. x9... moreWell the Zeiss texture mode is a big step forward - more in line with how pictures look on Oppo Find X6 Pro (which has much better sensors then X90PP on the additional sensors).

The x90PP is a phone that turns out usually decent looking photos with very good detail, so yeah you can do a lot with editing them. But the pictures are simply lacking any athmosphere out of the box. Especially in Zeiss natural mode. Now vivid mode better be called comic mode - cause the colours are right horrible. In video it's not as bad for the colours but no Zeiss modes available.

However what vivo does is always the same - rather overexpose, put strong HDR on dark parts and turn out great detail there. That is the safe way to take pictures which look decent - but you put 10 pictures besides each other on printout - while very picture for itself looks good - it's just boring. It lacks contrast - not as in contrast for single objects - but contrast for the parts of the picture. Turning off HDR helps - but clearly there is too much HDR.

Now when you shoot objetcts/persons against the sun - it will brighten them up so much - that everything else blows out and misses any contrast. That's actually not even fixable in photoshop. While in general the pics are great for photoshop - but before just too boring (and yeah vivid mode isn't a solution, because the colours are comic like).

That's why the AI and a dual stack sensor is needed. I'm sure in most cases X90PP will be better than x100 Pro - but not in that specific case.

I just find that a little weird, because I have a vivo X Note, with great sensors, but nowhere near as good as the X90 series, great processing as well, but again not as good as the X90 series, and an older flagship chipset.. yet it does take very good pictures in challenging conditions as well.

As for portraits, I don't take any, so yeah you might be right with that one, but in general turning on Zeiss helps with taking natural photos on vivo phones, and they usually do well in challenging conditions.

DarlingYext, 03 Nov 2023Just because your comment is long, doesn't mean you kn... moreI have a X90PP so I know what I'm talking about. It absolutely cannot take portraits (not face, full body) against the sun. it just blows out. Pixel 7 or S23U are way better here. Iphone 14 pro too.

Vivo is great at taking photos in good conditions. x90PP is not a phone so far to take good photos in bad conditions.
And for many things if you don't mind the horribly untrue colours where you can use gcam, in this case gcam is no better.

Maybe with OS4.0 it will be better? But that's a classic for dual stack sensors - so X100 series, Xiaomi 14, Find 7 Pro will surely beat all old phones in that field.

Seems like you've never heard of, or experienced vivo's uncanny HDR, that's what Ben Sin (ben's gadget reviews) calls it and I completely agree with him.

Photo out of it will be very similar to pixel 8 pro and s23u.
That is offense to the art of photography.

I like what they're are doing with the processing, I wish it was optional. Best of both worlds.

Vivo x100 should be released after vivo v30 released for global.

Well no matter the mode, Zeiss Natural or Zeiss textured, or vivid, the X90PP sucks big at taking photos against sunlight. Now Taking sunset photos is not the same as taking photos against sunlight. Sunset/Sunrise photos are suprisingly good, Other phones are way better at not overblowing the photos like Vivo does so far on against the light.
Vivo is great at fake portraits, it's never been good at nature photos - especially with bad light.
Vivo generally overexposes pictures - and uses excessive HDR - great for pixelpeeping and great if you edit the photos. Out of the box the pictures lack any kind of athmosphere however. The new texture mode greatly improved this but it's till quite lacking if say you want to take a picture of dark stormclouds approaching.

If you watch the videos on bilibili about Blue Star V Assistant (or let's translate it Vivo little blue assistant) it's all about AI and changing photos. You can tell the asisstant to add sunset/sunrise to your picture. The direction is 100% to AI enhanced photos - so nothing surprising in this announcement here. So far the bloggers didn't publish any full resolution AI enhanced pics of OS4.0 - but they should come soon (after X100 is going into sales).

Vivo decided to go full AI in 2024, so this announcement is just a tiny showcase of what they want to do. And Vivo never tried to produce photos that look like a plain old film camera - it was always playing it safe and excessive HDR/portrait smoothening (I mean there are countless functions in the portrait mode already from enlarging/or making smaller divers face parts like nose or chin), touching up, male or female makup (though the "male friendly makeup" does not work on europeans it's only working well with east asian skintones) - there night shots just blew up all the details - and well now it goes to adding sunrise/sunset in a way best for your social media impressions...
It's just that now pixelpeepers won't be too happy anymore - as the processing has gone overboard by adding things into a picture that weren't there.
Google removes things from pics, or takes many to get best expression, Vivo just uses AI to get you that superstar look, or turn your beer belly into a sixpack (yeah that function exists with the little blue assistant), increase your boob size and whatever. That is what OS4.0 and Vivo photography is all about.
What is reality is anyhow debatable, Vivo is clearly doing what the east Asian market demands. And that means pictures that look like your body and face has been fully optimised by beauty surgeons and the gym. And yeah the AI is clearly trained with east Asians - results on other ehtnics are still lacking a lot in comparison. Now this is just extended to nature photography.
I mean imagine you live in a smogged up megacity in Asia, India even more than China - the sun often doesn't make it through the smog, but you want that nice shot for your social media, Vivo makes it possible.
