It is funny reading commenrs in here,

First of all, you can already run google apps with gms on Huawei phones by using GBox or Gspace.

Harmony OS is microkernel arxhitexthre. It means common kernel and kernel services with user apps and their own services. This allows the same OS to be adopted to many different HW. There hasnt been any microkernel OS in large scale. IPhone is hybrid microkernel and android because its based on linux is monolithic. Like linux you wait years for an official update becsuse it is monolithic

HarmonyOS is already used in many HUAWEI devices includinf earbuds, tablets, watches and now their new EV. It really doesnt matter if they use ARM.or RISC V and my guess is they will move to risc v in the next kirin because they want to make sure arm isn't sanctioned.

HarmonyOS next is basically phone without APK support. Why? Google is already trying to ban them from using APK in android 14. So why would huawei support APK?

What will happen next is that all Chinese mobile phone manufacturers will support harmony OS and Harmony OS next. They will have their own "adapters" to run android on it. But as time goes on more apps will be in harmony OS

Btw. Microsoft edge office teams etc have already joined the ecosystem. For most apps it won't be much of an effort as it is just a different API call vs calling android

You will see harmony is globally. Not just huawei but xiaomi oppo etc will all support it. The market dominating influence in China will spread. It will end up with galaxy or koreans running android, iPhone on iOS and chinese manufactures on harmony next.

RexSceleratorum, 19 Nov 2023"ARM and RISC-V is 98% similar" Firstly, this ... more"Firstly, this needs some evidence. RISC is a category of instruction sets, and belonging in the category does not mean they share anything at all."

      Half true
      Half false
All RISC share the same basic way of doing things.

"RISC-V was built from the ground up to avoid taking any IP from ARM,"

RISC-V & ARM were forked from the same RISC branch. Please remember that patents right do expired after certain period of time. After expired, all can use it freely.

"so I very much doubt that they are similar."

      You're wrong

"Secondly, that's not how it works. If you produce native ARM code, you can't run it natively on a RISC-V CPU even if it turns out to be 98% similar."

      True.
But the 98% part means the work to make it fully supported is easy.

"You need a CPU with the exact same instruction set. Or a superset, of course."

ARM & RISC-V actually have the same instruction set.

It's not a better alternative, it's just an alternative.

Anyway if they prepare their global return to the EU and the USA they will have to put some OS in their devices, ANDROID or HARMONY OS. We will see.

And why was it banned outside of China?

It's so funny reading the comments of people defending this change contradicting each other, first you read them saying "it is good to have more competition!!" but then they go "china is its own world! who cares if they are not popular outside of it!!"

So which one is it? You can't just say you love more competition when in reality you will never see HarmonyOS in your own country because it was banned from selling in it, that just means iOS and Android will continue their duopoly and draconian practices as usual.

If you want to be more realistic about the matter then it is the chinese who are currently affected by this change, because their HarmonyOS phones could run apks but now they "magically" won't be able to. If your phone loses software functionality that can NEVER be considered a positive in any sense. It is really worrisome to see people not putting their gray matter to work.

All those app maker inside china will certainly support harmony.

Then, Some of the non-China will also try to support Huawei harmony if they want china.
This will create a great support of harmony.

That would be not good. Many apps aren't available on their store and we download the apks files from playstore, that means they won't work anymore?
they need to work on their store first before doing that major step
