Smallworld , 08 Jan 2024PSA: your phone is STILL secure even after it stops receivi... more> If you only download reputable apps from the Store and don't open weird links and download weird files, you're fine.

This is simply untrue. There have been a handful of zero-click exploits for popular messaging platforms and, in a few cases, using only the phone/chip manufacturers' apps and hardware. Manufacturers regularly fix firmware weaknesses that a malicious actor with physical access (via USB, Bluetooth, SIM card swap, etc.)

Android's Security Bulletins occasionally list critical vulnerabilities as well as multiple disclaimers:

"The most severe vulnerabilities in these sections could lead to remote escalation of privilege and/or code execution with no additional execution privileges needed. User interaction is not needed for exploitation."

"Exploitation for many issues on Android is made more difficult by enhancements in newer versions of the Android platform. We encourage all users to update to the latest version of Android where possible."

Once in a while, they post that an unpatched exploit is being actively used.

If I understand correctly, even installing the later Android versions using Sony's AOSP site---provided you're technical enough and have equipment to manage this---will degrade the functionality of some peripherals (camera, display, speakers) and potentially restrict which apps you can install e.g. those needing a high degree of device security.

Or Sony could just manage 4 to 7 years of updates like every other manufacturer not named ASUS...

Just got the update, so far so good, all working without any flaws. Gotta say that in general I am a tad disappointed with the Xperia 5 IV - most annoying issue is that it tends to lose SIM card connection for no reason every once in a while (hopefully that's providers fault, might try to order a new SIM card). Also the main camera is so so, auto setting in general worse than competition, LED on the back pretty weak compared to my older phones. And the battery degraded 15% within a year of use despite me trying to be careful with charging
... Apart from that a nice phone

PSA: your phone is STILL secure even after it stops receiving security updates!!!!!!

The main danger to your phone is downloading corrupted apps and files and security updates WON'T protect you against that.
If you only download reputable apps from the Store and don't open weird links and download weird files, you're fine.
As long as your apps are up to date, you're SAFE.

You guys need to stop believing that no security update = not safe anymore.
Even with an up to date phone, you can still catch viruses and adwares or get your info stolen.
          Security updates ≠ antivirus

Each time there is a new Android, it just piss off old habit to in the end have the exact same use, what's even the point to upgrade? I can't even tell what are the novelties for the last 4 android updates except some UI change for the sake of changing things.

Sony has the potential to make the best phones. After all, the best selling phones have their camera sensors! It seems they do not have the right tech leadership. And their designs have been unappealing and backward for years - just look at those thick bezels.. This translates to poor sales.

I had a tiny Xperia phone about 10 years ago with a dedicated night mode which took such great night shots, even my S22 Ultra cannot do.

So they definitely have the tech, they need passionate leadership and the strategy to be a best selling brand.
