It's never "bad" it's always at least good. MKBHD's test was flawed because he just pointed and shot, in reality even my mum who uses an iPhone at least changes the exposure slider or uses filters. Who's to say people won't use the other tools? Additionally, why didn't they take like at least 3 shots and chose the best one? If you want fairness then average it out like that? These camera comparisons take the cameras at their base levels but fail to point out that slight tinkering can make a monumental shift in quality. Take Vivo and Xiaomi for example, Vivo's Zeiss Natural would've made them the winner and Xiaomi's Leica Authentic would've given them a huge edge as well. Xiaomi'd have lost in HDR but the colour science is far more likeable.

GSM always pushes the idea of "vibrancy", they like it, but in reality most people prefer Google or Samsung (when they tone down their vibrancy in some photos by mistake, whenever they use the AI modes people don't generally like it). The worst part is that unfortunately, Chinese manufacturers will have a hard time with African people, they just don't make phones for that part, only for dark and light skinned asians and maybe some fair skinned people. That must be the reason why nearly all of them failed in the night shot.

potato4k, 10 Jan 2024Let's have a conversation in context. This is what ... moreSurveys, by their natures, are not objective due to the possibility of biases. For example, those who have seen enough number of outputs from phone cameras could recognise a particular processing pattern in a certain phone to always vote for it for the sake of supporting a brand. There are ways to reduce bias, such as forcing the participates to go through multiple surveys covering a far wider range of shooting scenarios, but mkbhd only covered the three scenes which ended up drastically devaluing it.

'Objectively better' implies it is better in every measure, so no matter how many times you conduct the tests using the different samples, Pixel should come out on top. Steel is 'objectively' heavier than aluminum, to give you an idea.

The only objective claim you could make using the currently available information is that Pixel did a better job than Oppo in an arbitrary test that mkbhd carried out. You cannot get rid of the 'in an arbitrary test mkbhd carried out' bit because Pixel is 'better' within that condition and that condition only. As Nick pointed out earlier, to say Pixel 'wins in photography' based on a singular survey by one Youtuber, is quite a stretch.

      This is what you said.
"I know what video you're referring to and Pixel "won" that blind camera competition, but that doesn't mean it has an objectively better camera than Oppo or vice versa."

My point was, that result is exactly objective, showing the Pixel did a better job than Oppo.
Again, I'm not discounting Oppo completely. Read my comments. OnePlus did pretty good as well.

That's the context of the conversation.

You can have your subjective opinion. That's fine.

If you push it further and claim that Pixel is "winning in photography" (which implies it's shown to be objectively superior in not only MKBHD's limited test but also in all other situations) as you did in your previous comment, though, then obviously there will be people like me who will disagree with that take. I think I made myself pretty clear at this point.

And it's a data point. That's my point. An objective data is objective. Whether you feel it's enough or not, that's your own subjectivity.

T... moreThe only information that it provides is that more people in MKBHD's audience like Pixel's photos over those from other brands. That's it. It indicates general trends/characteristics in photos that people tend to prefer, that's nothing to do with the quality of an image itself. It's a survey about their personal artistic preferences.

Not to mention that the test was conducted based on only 3 scenes, 1 from each low-light portrait, indoor portrait and indoor portrait (in portrait mode), which is far from being enough to know anything about the general processing tendency of each phone. How do they perform for shooting landscapes? Group shots that include various skin colours? Moving dogs in backlight scenes? A concert full of rapidly flashing neon lights? Food? We just never know.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the survey myself and seeing the vote results on his channel was definitely fun. It's just that it's not meant to be taken seriously to draw any proper, scientific conclusion, let alone decide which camera is the "best".

If Oppo/OnePlus decided to tune their post-processing to mimic how Pixel processes its photos to make them look more "average consumer friendly" or whatever, I would say it would be a huge misstep for them.

I'm hoping Oppo (and all the other manufacturers) will continue improving their camera software to get the most out of available hardware too, but not in the way Google is doing right now at the moment.

Pixel wins, and shows that software plays more important part nowadays than hardware. Now not saying Oppo is bad, OnePlus was pretty up there as well, so definitely they're doing something good.

Not to mention, even the most recently released cameras can spit out pretty terrible-looking JPEGs if you don't know how to use them to begin with, and this is coming from someone who regularly uses mirrorless.

For most average Joes, dedicated cameras are "obsolete" in the sense that they are nowhere near as convenient as what they use daily, which are their phones.

There's no such thing as the "best" phone camera as beauty is in the eye of the beholder, therefore naturally there's no "winner" in this regard, but what you can say for sure is that Pixel still goes overboard with sharpening and noise reduction at times. I'm also not a fan of how Pixel handles tonality sometimes to create a very HDR-like or contrasty look on images.

Pixel's cameras used to have a strong charm (and still do for a lot of people I presume), but in recent years I really grew out of it and here I'm just hoping that they will tone down its aggressive image manipulation to bring back the Nexus 5X/6P-level of natural post-processing.

IpsDisplay, 08 Jan 2024Hardware really is more important than software Hardware... moreSoftware is more important when the hardware is reaching a plateau. Seriously, we are at peak smartphone, and any new smartphone won't be a significant jump over a previous year, 2, or even 3 generation old phone. This is where mastery in software comes in. Case in point, Google. Still winning in photography despite people mocking its Tensor hardware and google using old camera sensors.

Well, keep working on it Oppo. So far, Google Pixel is still winning (watch MKBHD video), but the OnePlus is getting close. So looks like Oppo is getting somewhere.

the capacity is the hardware and the speed is the software. You can't just have 4GB of 5000Mhz or 32GB of 2166Mhz. 16GB at 3200Mhz is the best. Anyways, come check you my build
