Weekly poll: can the Asus ROG Phone 8 find a place in your pocket?

14 January 2024
The gaming phone has been reformed to be better for casual users. It's still a powerful gaming phone and now has features like an LTPO display.

Sort by:

I chose the option, "None of the Above".

The other options didn't make sense. Yes, I'm ok with gaming phone as everyday driver. Yes, I'm ok with flagship.. but problem is beyond it.

Let me explain my answer. Its gonna cost a bomb, but with just 256GB, it will fill up in about 1 year, and if you have older stuff to copy to it, then good luck altogether...
With no microSD slot, at least 1 TB should've been top of the line model. Or 512 GB?
Down facing speakers are another minus. Camera and Video recording modes are also not maxed out.
I'm keeping 128+512GB storage on my 2019 LG G8x, and now it has 450~GB space occupied with memories and all... ROG Phone 8 is useless to me.

1989 nothinghappened, 15 Jan 2024You should learn the real truth then, yuzu is still in deve... moreYuzu, unlike Eggs, can use touch screen, but you're right about compatibility.

At the moment, the main games are well emulated, a few glitches here and there, but nothing that cannot preclude a complete gaming experience, furthermore the Qualcomm customized Turnip drivers are progressing hand in hand in development.

And for those who want the maximum, there are also specific Turnip-Zik-DRI3 drivers.

As for the DSP, the proprietary chip developed by RedMagic, it is a set of hardware and software technologies, aimed at guaranteeing less waste of hardware resources, therefore also from an audio point of view, I lighten the entire SOC. (including Qualcomm DSP)

It can be said that it behaves like a second DSP.

Zendroid, 14 Jan 2024Nah, I don't like lag or ping spikes that doesn't... moreHow do you know it will still happen here?

That would be acceptable to me, since not much media is native-aspect-ratio for today's stretched-out phone screens.

Even eggns cant. And if you emulate switch for hours you're gonna need a controller and powerbank, so add $50.

And how does cpu use less cycles communicating between itself and the redmagics audio coprocessor, when the soc itself has qualcomms own dsp?

YUKI93, 15 Jan 2024I can understand that, though I'd say any LG flagship ... moreI am also using the ZX110, extremely cheap, yet extremely balanced sound and the last for years and years. Absolutely impossible for bluetooth headsets; but my main problem with bluetooth is the inconvenience of charging another device. Absolutely ridiculous. If at least bluetooth headphones worked while charging with a power bank, it would have been more acceptable, but i haven't heard of any with that functionality.

Where is the option "ASUS - never again" ???

Anonymous, 15 Jan 2024I am not a gamer, but as a music lover, I appreciate the 3.... moreI can understand that, though I'd say any LG flagship phone in the secondhand market is a better buy if you deeply care about smartphone audio quality. The built-in Quad DAC is in a completely different league from the rest, including Sony. I can even vouch that it was my current V50 that made me stop embracing wireless audio and going all wired. Even with my budget-tier wired Sony headphones, no amount of wireless earbuds can beat the sheer quality of LG's Quad DAC.

Litterary any phone can be a gaming phone and a Nubia Red Magic 9 pro is way better than ASUS and even way more durable and better looking.

The reality most people don't understand about punch holes (and notches as well) is that there are still a lot of apps that cannot natively hide them. I only realized it when I used my LG V50, which has a notch, and my LG Wing, which doesn't, side by side. Suffice it to say the difference is real, especially when watching videos.

Too much of a price hike. Used to start at 600 i think. That would be a good price. The nubia red magic latest whatever model it it 9 i think, that's much better value.

If I could live with an hole in my screen I would buy a Samsung or other not gaming flagship (I'm an happy ROG Phone 6 owner).

                                rizki1, 15 Jan 2024buy a Red Magic and a Nintendo Switch for that price.Fixed:

                                - buy a RedMagic at half the price and with Nintendo Switch inside. (Yuzu is Free).

You just have to buy the Nintendo games, then you can play them comfortably even on the tram.

                                ps: RedMagic has Jack.

And the RedEngine Audio, it's phenomenal. (audio coprocessor, similar to "soundblaster" chips in PC sound cards)

It saves a lot of CPU cycles, therefore, less overheating for the CPU, which is thus free to process (in games and Retrogaming/emulation) in all its power.

Nope !..with the reduced battery capacity, if I could even afford it,I would have rather go in for the predecessor.

rather buy another play station than buying a gaming phone in my entire life.
so, not buying this is the answer.
