The Galaxy S24 Ultra's 4K 120fps and 8K zoom video are a very big deal

18 January 2024
Only the Xperia 1 V and 5 V match the 4K and the Xiaomi 13 Ultra zoom 8K.

Sort by:

The Oneplus 9 pro also had 4k 120fps

If this had sdcard slot, video recording wouldn't be a nightmare having to worry your internal storage getting eaten by 100gb's of videos.

Time and tests/reviews will tell how much of a big deal this actually will be.
4K 120 fps is definitely a great thing, but when has 8K video ever been of acceptable quality in smartphones? Even from primary cameras with large sensors, 8K has mostly if not always been of quetionable benefits.
So, how much better 8K may become when captured on a tiny tele sensor?

Anonymous, 19 Jan 2024HLG is not usually overexposed. It's overexposed only ... moreNo. I watch this samples on XZ3, QDOLED etc. HLG even on pro mirrorless cameras has tends to have a little flat profile. Most samples in VideoPro without AE HLG correction has a little overexposure (too bright - even people ask me how make video a little less bright). CineaPro has different HDR than VideoPro, this second is much easier for normal user.
PS I think it was rolled correclty becuase I see cirlce sun and details "here and there".
:) Especially on "UTS" part I. Maybe sometimes flares are to big but on video falares are sometimes in demand.

19.5:9 ratio is perfect tho, anything above that is too tall while anything below that is too wide (atleast for bigger screens)

LucasN82, 19 Jan 2024No.. via wiki "The hybrid log–gamma (HLG) transfer fun... moreHLG is not usually overexposed. It's overexposed only because if you are looking at the 1V display as reference which is wrong point of review reference due to many reasons such ambient lighting, display brightness etc. Now that Video Pro has a histogram and Cinema Pro always had a meter you should always have a point of reference. If you are shooting on the fly with video pro the best practice is to underexpose the image on the display, that doesn't mean the video will be underexposed but 1V will view it a bit darker. That's fine. Auto mode in Video Pro tends to go on the bright side.

With CinemaPro its a bit different. Every color look or color profile has it's exposure sweetspot which diviates from the 0. If you are shooting VENICE CS you are wasting your time. You should be filming in BRIGHT profile and have the slider go tad bit to the right of 0. If you are shooting OPAQUE for some reason, then you need to boost ISO or lower the shutter until meter hits 1 or 1.33

Your video on youtube is hitting 2000nits because of high specular highlight of the sun hotspot that was not properly rolled off because of sensor and lens limitations.

Actually, there are bunch of Nubia smartphones that capable of recording 4k 120fps

jiyen235, 19 Jan 2024I'm not sure but is HLG supported in any phones at all... moreNo.. via wiki "The hybrid log–gamma (HLG) transfer function is a transfer function jointly developed by the BBC and NHK for high dynamic range (HDR) display.[1] It's backward compatible with the transfer function of SDR (the gamma curve)... HLG is an HDR format that uses the HLG transfer function, BT.2020 color primaries and a bitdepth of 10-bit.[8] HLG was designed to be backward compatible with SDR UHDTV. However, HLG is not intended to be fully backward compatible with traditional SDR displays that cannot interpret BT.2020 colorimetry"
HLG can handle up to 5000nits and it is similar to SONY S-LOG with a little lower dynamic range (S-log color space is bigger than visible spectrum). It is 100% HDR but with better flexibility. Xperia 1V record on all lenses with 4K120p HLG (DCI2020) and believe me it is amazing. In HLG (HDR) on 1V you can add exposure correction and even your own ISO and shutter speed. HLG is much better than normal HDR recording format, and it has amazing low noises, dynamic range and brightness and.. 1V has totally new sensor with different sensitivity than other sensors. HLG on 1V achieve beyond 2000nits (try it on QDOLED) If you want HLG samples (straight from phone without color grading, post production and no edit)...
                                  https://youtu.be/v73xWohQspw
If you want to see the full capabilities of HLG go to "UTS" video and start at 3:45. You will see 24mm and 85mm there in full capacity (in my opinion). Every pixel is straight from phone.
And about "relatively overexposed". You can see (if you search) that you can add AE correction and achieve very contrast videos even on HDR mode. Usually HLG is overexposed but here in 1V you have near fully control on HDR brightness.
PS Some people knows me here that I test Xperia since 1II

Anonymous, 19 Jan 2024What is a real use case when 4K 120 fps is a must (or a nee... moreWell, as explained it helps you make slow motion videos in 4K resolution.

Now, a person may use this for promotion of his/her small business too, using editing and all. A large business will surely want a full frame sensor based dedicated camera for most purposes, but small businesses can use it.
I use a LG G8x, and I too create promotional videos, where I work. On youtube, check this video: FU4meTOZfjA

Creating the same on 4K would mean you'll get sharper video for bigger screens.. but yes, if you screen itself is just FullHD, then its useless.

Narazumono, 19 Jan 2024Aside from the fact that Sony phones are only sold in a few... moreEven Samsung's Galaxy Z Flip5 has a taller screen than Sony's, so it's not worth despising such a thing. After all, most phones nowadays use 20:9 and 20.5:9 screens, which is verging to Sony's 21:9 screen. The only reason Samsung sticks to the 19.5:9 aspect ratio on their bar smartphones is because of Apple, that's all.

I don't mind with the stock Android skin since you don't have to stay with it all the time.

I think GSMArena forgot when OnePlus 9 Pro had 4K @120 fps (using the ultrawide cam) and actually the quality was exceptional, shoot an entire movie with that mode once. OP 9 Pro became a horrible phone after multiple software updates but that's a different story. Reviewers tend to praise Samsung for 'new' features like it's never been done, comparable to how Apple praises itself for feature long avaialble on Android. Let's be honest, S24 must be skipped - too similar with the S23, the real upgrade will be the S25. Peace!
