I REALLY WANT TO SAY QUEUE THE FAMOUSING AI VOICE EMEME VIDEO ON YOUTUBE B U T B I G B U T. It's like my lazy ass......

It depends on how heavy a user you are. My parents can do just fine with flagship phones from 2018 (6 years ago) while I can see 2021 flagships lagging and stuttering already. Even apart from that, battery degradation and how quickly Android itself is changing means that phones more than 4 years old are already obsolete.

True, updating them with the latest software may help, but the actual hardware itself cannot keep up. Mind you, we only use flagships, so I can only imagine that "mid-range" and "low-end" phones are actually terrible.

My OnePlus7 simply needed a new battery after 4.5 years and every service center in the radius of 500 km around me told me that the phone has been discontinued for over a year now and so no spare parts are available. Had to give up a pristine phone just because of non availability of battery. OnePlus sucks.

Xypleth, 07 Feb 2024OnePlus phones just are not very prestigious/high-quality. ... moreI STILL use my OP3T as a side phone (128/6 gb). Yes, the batterylife is quite useless right now, but it is expected. But apart from that it works phenominally well. I guess you got a bad piece or I got a good piece. AND apart from the 5G, i dont really miss anything in it. I am not a vlogger or gamer so the latest processor and big ram dont matter to me. I am actually thinking of getting a battery replacement just to keep it going some more. The security isssue is one of the most critical point for a phone longetivity and these need to be extended as long as possible. With Samsung and Google raising the bar, it is best to ensure that.

Guruprasad, 07 Feb 2024What is this dumb answer, the chipsets oneplus use (SD8 ser... moreLargely true, but still easier said than done. Consider this...

Google is a huge corporation, which has to ensure Stock Android (the lightest) fits the older hardware.
They have full hardware and software control, today and tomorrow. The Pixel few years from now might come with a built in custom chip if they want. They're powerful enough to change even Android OS itself.

Oneplus is a mid-sized corporation, which has to ensure their Android skin, which is heavier and requires more tuning, must fit older hardware. And they only have control of their own skin.

Plus, Google has a smaller product range, while Oneplus will certainly have a bigger range, with Nord and other future brands. Any effort put might be multiplied proportionately.

Considering these reasons, I consider Oneplus' 5 yrs as acceptable against 7-8 yrs of Google.

Now they need to have a much lower price if they are going to convince certain customers like me, raising the price more on OnePlus 13 while offering inferior longevity would make me switch to Pixel or Samsung.

CargoJoe, 12 Feb 2024Yeah. I doubt people would keep their phones for more than ... moreI tend to agree, if we were still having a transition like the old SD with their own in house Cryo (SD 821 and backwards). I have the old mi 4c, despite a quite solid custom rom support, its performance didn't hold out to run new apps since 2019, just about 4 years since its launched. But arm architecture is slowly evolved after SD 835. Even with SD 845, its performance still matches many of low-mid SOC after almost 7 years after its released. In short, it would hold up, unlike those SD 821 backwards. Can't say about mid ranger SoC. 2019 SD 665 is hardly to keep up with even with low-mid these years, even Helio G99 is considerably faster. My point is: if your phone bears the flagship from 2018 and upwards, it's most likely will be good up to 6-7 years after its released, if you're very careful about keeping your phone and maintaining it.

rosesarerosie, 07 Feb 2024Look at unboxings and benchmarks from that time People wer... moreno, they will not, we are almost at moore's law, phones from 2022 will not be much faster than the ones from 2024 and so on, we have hit peak silicon tech, from now on we need to find something else.

Yeah. I doubt people would keep their phones for more than 5 years. Let alone 7-10. Though I probably would. The main problem is smartphone build. Not everything can last. Some will die in two years. Others five. And we're talking about similarly brand and models. As much as I like longer support, smartphones durability isn't given. You either lucky or clumsy. There's no guarantee your phone will survive as long as those support.

                              So their reasoning is:
"When our competitors say their software policy will last seven years, remember that their phone's battery may not."

Yet OnePlus decided to make their batteries non-removeable? 💀 Though my LG V30's battery was just fine after that long. Their whole point is stupid.

If that sounds dumb to you, it's because it's dumb to think that phones will never require a new battery just because yours never required a new one.

Updates would be pretty good if they didn't make performance worse and be made mostly to fix the stuff they broke from the previous update lol. (That's why there's plenty of people asking in reddit/forums if the latest update is safe to install)

if people you same device for 7 years who will buy there newer models then.

limit people current choices to make them shift to newer one.
And as far as custom roms are concern
when they die down around 2018 , Rooting is more and more difficult even accessing data folder is restricted so yeah It not only battery that the reason got this , it's also corporate money that's the deciding point.
