can't believe Canon and Nikon still not in the smartphone space. Japan is truly ageing.

dcdev, 22 Feb 2024It"s your experience and your friend's experience... moreTrue that I don't have full statistics. But just go to any social media. Most of the photos are either from the main or some small zoom. I can say to you what you said - it's your experience, nothing else.
It is dark because you cannot make up any F number that you want. The F-number is the focal length/diameter of the lens. And that is another reason to go for smaller zooms. Because of that it is easier to implement better quality x3 lenses, than x10, x15, or even more crazy ones.

On the other side, most of people don't have telephoto cameras, they use X1 and uw and don't worry.
BTW, that x10 isn't perfect, I would use it more often, but it's too dark.

Can we all just appreciate how hard manufacturers like Xiaomi are working to bring true pro level hardware to smartphone cameras? I mean seriously, all high megapixel, good quality glass on all focal lengths with a large main sensor and variable aperture? Who else is giving consumers this level of control and attention to detail. Wish we had more like this in the US.

                Hopefully this won't be deleted.

I think physics will always win. Lower your expectations and if the results please you then be happy.

I was saying that for most people very good x3 will be much, much more useful than x10. I have S23U. I just checked my LR. I have 17 photos taken with x10. Out of almost 12k from S23 Ultra. My friend bought an iPhone 15 Pro Max and when zooming he uses x2-x3 max zoom. So, not base pro, not max would be better for him, as right now he is digitally cropping. And I assume that this is the case for most of the people.

It should be about 1/2 from 1/2.5" at 230mm, about 1/5" against 1/3.5".

Why not good brands, like Canon, Nikon, Panasonic or Fujifilm?

It's all in the software, not the hardware. Look at the Pixel 6a. It's got the ancient IMX363, yet it produces superior photos to recent midrangers with superior hardware.

I don't like the look of photos taken with my Redmi Note 13 Pro, so I installed Gcam. I now get photos that I'm very happy with. The hardware hasn't changed. It's all about photo processing, and OEMs don't need to set up "institutes" to improve photo processing.

The cameras of all phone companies have reached their physical limits due to thickness requirements, the only way is to increase the thickness of the smartphone to have more space for lenses and sensors.
