Android Developer Preview 2 to let all games break the 60fps threshold

22 March 2024
You'll now have an OS-wide setting to not limit games to 60fps.

Finally, an actually useful feature Android is introducing! Last time we got something good was the notification confirmation in Android 13. Android 11, 12, and 14 were all purely regressions and/or gimmicks.

Foxtrot2Novmbr, 23 Mar 2024So why most games on android run on 60fps? They not designed to run higher, low end chipsets can barely sustain 60fps anyway.

Cannot wait to play candy crush at 120 FPS!!!!

The Samsung A55 gaming reviews has consistently hit how MLBB didn't have all settings unlocked on day one, and the complaints are echoed by commenters as well.

And, well, there's a reason why many games offers configs similar to PC games these days. People just expect it for larger games. They do care about FPS.

Foxtrot2Novmbr, 23 Mar 2024So why most games on android run on 60fps? Because most mobile games are shitty cashgrabs that have no reason to have more than 60fps or even 30 sometimes.

But judging from the way how currently android is. I could say its really a MESS. Which is why I still use my old Samsung galaxy note 9 running on android 10. If I were to upgrade my phone. It would be where android 17 is.

And from the looks of things. A lot of samsung phones won't get the update.

"Lets say android 15 allows you to play games beyond 60fps. How many phones will get the 15 update?" - Not sure how many phones will get it. Safe to say 2021 flagships and midrangers will get it.

"How many games will get an update that allows you to play 120FPS and above?" That's solely up to the game studio/developer to update the same to allow it or not.

Listen, your questions can easily be countered.

Foxtrot2Novmbr, 23 Mar 2024Dev's are already doing that for years. Even if th... more> It's up to the phone if it can run the games beyond 60fps.

Yeah, software wise, it all goes back to the software developer for each phone. Since you're using a Samsung, pretty sure any Samsung that running non-core One UI 4 (Android 12) and One UI Core 5 (Android 13) will get this update.

Hardware wise, even if you're using an entry-level chipset (assuming your chipset has at least 2x Cortex A7x chip instead of some crap Helio P35/G35/G36/G37 or Exynos 850 that doesn't have any Cortex-A7x chip), it's still possible to get a higher frame rates, depends on your graphic settings. If you set your game to the lowest resolution, it MIGHT possible to get constant 60 fps.

Tbh, with custom ROM, it's actually possible to unlock this feature on your phone. But if I were you, I wouldn't risk it. 🤣

404, 23 Mar 2024I might or might not be wrong, but if I remember correctly ... moreDev's are already doing that for years.

Even if they bypass the restriction by disabling default frame rates. It's up to the phone if it can run the games beyond 60fps. Not everybody is using a brand new android phone. And mostly will be using old phones.

Its up to the developers if they wanted to ... moreI might or might not be wrong, but if I remember correctly there are some cases where developers lock higher frame rates on their game based on user's chipset. So, for example, you might can get 90 fps on this x game on Snapdragon 7 Gen 1, but for the same game they also lock the frame rates to under 60 fps on Snapdragon 680.
From what I understand Android kinda bypasses this "restriction" though.

404, 23 Mar 2024Because the game dev said soAnd in the end. Its up to the developers if they wanted to update their game to support 120hz and beyond. If not, then there's no reason to get a brand new android phone.

Up until now. I'm still using the samsung galaxy note 9 snapdragon variant with 512GB storage. Even thou I'm missing 4 updates. It's still a working unit. And I can play games with it. If I were to upgrade my android handset. It would be on Android 17.

Mills, 22 Mar 2024Dimensity and Snapdragon GPUs do miles better than A17 Pro GPU.So why is the game locked on 60fps? Lets say android 15 allows you to play games beyond 60fps. How many phones will get the 15 update? How many games will get an update that allows you to play 120FPS and above?

What about ANGLE GPU Driver.I tried it one and got overheating entire motherboard and battery drain on my Samsung Galaxy A34 5G One UI 6.
