AI-infused iOS 18 to be "the most ambitious overhaul" in history

27 March 2024
The claim comes from "people working on the upgrade", quoted by Apple connoisseur Mark Gurman.

I just hope they give us an option to switch off the AI gimmickery. In my experience they get in your way more often than not. Android's implementation of AI into their keyboards is a good example ( repeatedly gets in the way of typing with hilariously bad word and sentence suggestions)...

In fact, I don't think any phone does nowadays. Vivo and Oppo have their own custom ISP chip. And phones that do not have a delicated ISP use their own image processing. iPhones definitely do not use Snapdragon ISP because they do not use Snapdragon processors.

I am not exactly sure what point you are trying to make.

And the phone with the better camera hardware will take better pictures than the one without. Pixels and iPhones definitely do not have the best camera hardware.

TechJocky, 27 Mar 2024Oppo, Xiaomi and Vivo all are ahead in the camera department. No they're not. Slapping a Hasselblad or Leica brand and putting some filters on the camera app do not equal being ahead. A lowly Pixel a phone would still produce better photos than them. They all simply rely on the processing provided by the SoC. If you feel they're ahead, then it's thanks to Qualcomm improving the Snapdragon's ISP.

The AI strategy will be "front and centre" for iOS 18, Gurman says. It's not just him - Apple's SVP of Marketing Greg Joswiak tweeted about the upcoming conference, saying it will be "Absolutely Incredible!", needlessly capitalizing both words to spell out "AI".

Let's see, whether the iOS 18 is that spectacular overhaul. Before looking to deep at creepy AI features Apple should urgently cater for iOS18 capabilities in the direction Productivity features. Currently iOS17.x on an IPhone is way too dumb to let users work with Office Apps, File Apps, PDF apps and many more on a connected external 16:9 monitor in a decent manner. This letter-boxed / pillar-boxed crap from Apple feels so incredibly incapable in the year 2024! The absence of a split-creen feature and a decent desktop mode (like Samsung DeX) is a shame as well. And why not having a pencil support in the light of an expected screen-size of 6,9 inch for an IPhone 16 Pro Max / Ultra? Who needs cheap AI to cut out objects from pictures and do whatever translations with a too high latency? Apple - kick your small-minded product managers, so that they invent some decent poductivity solutions for the next IPhone 16 Pro Max / Ultra!! That would help users much more than those playground AI features for big eyes in a nursery school.
