That's a strong hint it will launch in iOS 18.

Nobody uses SMS/RCS there as most plans don’t have unlimited texting and most people use prepaid plans. WhatsApp is the standard over there, with countries like Thailand uses Line, and Philippines uses Viber. Nobody uses SMS and no carriers there support RCS. When you enable RCS there, you’re simply using Google’s server.

Is it possible to turn the feature off? Hopefully, Apple gives us the option to.

La Hatene, 29 Mar 2024with all that extra-long explanation, again it's just ... moreDid you miss when I said in other countries, carriers actually dropped support for RCS already? To get RCS working, you need carrier support on both the sender and receiver. And even if you're comfortable using Google's server, not all carriers are compatible with it. Eg me personally, one of my cell provider actually blocked my account when I enabled RCS through Google.

So there's a reason why nobody cares except Google and Americans.

WhatsApp is a third-party app owned only by Facebook, while any phone company can build a server for its users RCS not just Google or Apple it's open season for everyone.

jrmhjhn, 29 Mar 2024it's just funny that apple is always late.Apple actually already leapfrogged RCS with iMessage. RCS is an old standard. Many carriers around the world actually have dropped support for it long time ago as the market and tech have moved on towards services that are carrier independent (Whatsapp, Line, Wechat, etc). Yes, proper RCS support depends on your carrier, just like the old SMS. It's just that Google, after failing to create their own messaging service multiple times, decided to revive the zombie RCS and pretend like it's a new thing by injecting their own proprietary non-standard stuff and using their own servers. Worse, Google does nothing to actually propose better features like e2ee to the standard. They just tell carriers and users to use Google's server and app.

Because most Americans (yes, RCS is practically an American problem, no other countries actually cares, and many have dropped support/deprecated RCS) are too dumb to read wikipedia, it forces Apple to look back at RCS. Apple decided to take the actual standardized version of RCS (instead of Google's frankenstein one), and plan to propose proper e2ee to the actual standard (instead of Google's solution by using their own app and servers).

Why is Google calling it "fall of 2024". Apple is actually adopting it and is good for the consumers and industry. Making fun of them for doing the good thing doesn't look good on Google, who is driving the adoption of RCS.

Nope it wasnt and then they had to update it to get it to the same level as Androids, and is Apples file manager as good as Androids? Hell no and I dont think Androids are beta testing when Apple Iphones big updates come out with alot of issues and they need subsequent updates to fix all the issues.
