Apple might have to let iPhone users uninstall the Photos app because of EU rules

02 April 2024
The DMA demands that users are able to install alternative apps - but also that they can remove pre-installed Apple apps.

Anonymous, 02 Apr 2024So it's good for consumers that they can save some sto... moreSSDs need to be 10% empty to function properly. In today's world that's anywhere from 12-100GB of space. A few hundred megabytes won't make that much of a dent in preserving that 10%. If the EU wanted to make a meaningful contribution, it would work on privacy rights and give users total control preventing user data from being sold. Sadly instead we get debates over deleting the stock photo app. I'm not opposed to it. It's just inconsequential and a waste of time for everyone.

Anonymous, 03 Apr 2024Because on Samsung removing Google stuff is very easy. B... moreDon't forget the shady deal Samsung has with Meta and Microsoft.

You can not remove most of the MS services (link to windows, swiftkey, onedrive and so on) from Samsung, only turn off.

You can remove Facebook app, but Meta services and Meta installer can not be removed, only turned off.

And turning off is not the same as removing.

Not to mention Samsung their own apps, some can be removed but the worst ones only via adb.

Worst offender is Samsung Keyboard, you can not normally remove it or turn it off, and the moment you use a third party keyboard, samsung one it's clipboard does always work and can not be turned off, huge security risk there for some there.

EU should look at that too.

But the moment you want to remove Samsung stuff you need to mess around with adb, and take the risk you can break stuff because Samsung messed too much with the Android they use.

Invetor, 03 Apr 2024this is getting ridiculous apple should stop selling ph... moreIt starts to get silly apple has to do it but android not really.

My Pixel is pretty bloatware free but most Google apps can not be removed without root or adb.

And don't get me started about Samsung, in my opinion they are even worse than Apple because Samsung trows all of their stuff ABOVE the Google stuff Android provides.

Kinda weird EU is ignoring that.

                    Android dear EU?

And no, adb and root don't count because that is too difficult for most people (not me, but I am not most people)

So here I am waiting until I can remove Google Photo app from my Pixel, hurry up EU.

                      this is getting ridiculous

apple should stop selling phones in EU. If people want to buy an iphone, they can import it just like how we android people import phones from china.

in my country, people buy iphones despite of their very high price and availability of plenty other android phones. So if apple stops officially selling in EU, I don't think it'll hurt their sales as much as we think. People will buy what they want, and it'll be an iphone most of the time. And so they'll buy it from importers. no problemo.

Let people uninstall Safari and let them use other browsers instead! All other iOS browsers right now are Safari in disguise forced to use WebKit.

elmarcello, 02 Apr 2024I believe all that refers merely to somewhat complicated le... moreit does not matter that it is their OS, it is that the entire ecosystem is held to ransom, is locked down under the so called guise of security and privacy, and that everything else to apple is simply inferior, basically non of that is true.
And at the end of the day, people have choice, Take Microsoft, they built their own OS and bundled explorer with it as part of the set up package, they were fined for not giving people choice even though users could simply go online and download another browser, they were then fined again (their own fault this time) because they missed the deadline day for this to be turned on.
If these sanctions are good enough for microsoft then they are good enough for apple as well.
I personally think a simple disable function is perfectly fine.

I start to think, I really hope EU can forces all vendors — including both Apple and all Android vendors that operate in EU area — to make Camera, Messages, Phone, Photos, and Browser to be uninstallable. I'm tired of all vendors forcing all of their shii's into consumer's throat, without ability to remove it (in a normal way).

justasmile, 03 Apr 2024Well, you can disable and uninstall all updates. That's what I like about android. Disabling stock apps is pretty useful if you don't use them often, but maybe still need it once or twice.

The subject of the matter is the unfairness of the so called Digital Act which seemingly targets only key manufacturers, until now Microsoft and Apple are the most talked about here. If there is such a need for people to uninstall a photos app of all things, then it should be all the smartphone manufacturers in the discussion, not just Apple. Everyone understands what this law means, we are not stupid, u seem to keep saying the same things to everyone to no end. The bigger issue is the ability to uninst every app you want to combat the bloat ware problem, that is bigger issue than Apple's fkin photos app for God's sake
