Even worse - the zombie parasite code will likely run on all future android phones regardless of whether you use the feature.. you'll be helping to look for random lost phones or aiding nefarious agents track their target.. even after your battery is dead!

Disgusting. I hope the EU stops this. Between getting tracked by third parties or losing a phone, I think losing the phone is the best outcome

Samsung had offline 'Find my phone' years ago (Galaxy devices only), which was an improvement over the 'Find my phone' Google released for android phones in 2013. Google learns/copies from new customizations made by OEM android device makers and makes them available to all android users in the later versions of android.
This is why android is such a superior operating system than iOS. The level playing field is making Google up its game.
Many Android improvements are actually inspired by android OEM manufacturer customizations first and get incorporated in later android versions.
iOS is inspired more by Apple's greed and profit - locking an iPhone user in its walled garden/ecosystem resulting to very slow improvements.
Apple has to ensure that only iphone branded accessories and only Apple owned apps work perfectly with iPhones and get the best integration by giving them undue advantage in software integration while restricting others/the competition.
Competition from the Appstore gets second class treatment with so many integration/access restrictions rendering them unappealing and half-baked as substitute for Apple made accessories and apps. It is why Apple is sued by the US government. Apple is stiffling innovation and makes other 3rd party apps and 3rd party accessories worse not because they are inferior to Apple's own offerings, but rather because Apple IS INTENTIONALLY CRIPPLING them in software by not giving them the same interoperability treatment in software like Apple's own apps:

Can it be permanently disabled? You don't have to be a drug trafficker to require privacy from third parties. I can sort of see this becoming a concern for businesses or public sectors not wanting external companies keep track of their employees at their site, for instance.
Can you elaborate on how many hours or days it keeps tracking? If the phone kills the power with a few percent battery left on the phone, the bluetooth radio can keep going for quite some time.

very good feature against theft and I hope they will add it to the older pixel 7 too. Now when sb steals your phone and turns it off you have no chance to find it ever. Pixel phones = the best phones on the market.
