Mobilemaster, 15 Apr 2024I think this is a good move from Sony. Sometimes you need t... moreThe thing is this new phone display size wise is not significantly different than what's found on current 1V. Aspect ratio here doesn't make any difference cause it's not like they kept 6.5" diagonal and switched it from 21:9 to 19:5 to make display larger. They took smaller 19:5 display to accommodate replacement for 21:9

I think this is a good move from Sony. Sometimes you need to change things, or to come with something new to see the reaction from your fans. To be honest, I never liked the narrow display. Of course there are people who loves it, but there are a lot who doesn't. :D
What I would like to see at Sony phones is a faster charging speed lol, and better software so you can take better photos on Auto mode.

Some great posts in favour of Sony's lead and core staples of Android phones long ago have been made throughout the comments. Stellar remarks, truly.

At the end of the day tho, WHOM amongst them are ACTUALLY going to put their miney where theie mouth is and drop the mad $$$$ on the Xperia VI when its officially available for order?!

I'll bet less than 5% of said commentors will. Thats the sad truth.

Xperia 1V has 4K120fps (HLG) [Dolby Vision] video recording (you can transcode HLG to DV). Video quality of this device is staggering but non of reviews mentioned that because they got sponsors. Believe me, 98% of testers are fake and paid.

Bravosixgoingdark, 12 Apr 2024So according to sources if true 19.5:9 is only for this yea... moreThis was fake rumor.

Before mark 5 was announced, sony tested 4K 21:9 from Boe, I think C9 oled material. Screen was 6.9".
If it was intention to get just from.another supplier, this would not be issue and Boe would have time enough.

More customised screen = higher price

                🤔

Firstly, you need to realise a 16:9 display (heck even 16:10) are called WIDEscreen. And you were arguing FOR having a wide device, as it is more comfortable in hands, and fits better into pockets. So you made fallacy in your analysis. It's that when you go to a 21:9 it's now wide + wide, or what they deem as ultra WIDE screen. Now I'd take your side but I just had a look at my jean pockets and they are definitely not a skinny rectangle. So I think your point is not valid. Otherwise where do we go, what is the logical conclusion, do we just end up at the Nokia Lipstick phone again?

If you had not figured it out, I give much praise to 21:9 screen. It's an actual standard, with uses in terms of Apps and Videos. Unlike anything between 16:9 to 21:9, those are not any established standard. There's no video recording or playback for it that is popular. And there's no Programs that are optimised for it, outside of Android which automatically adjusts the Apps to suit the certain display (just like floating windows).

So if I had a preference, here is how it would go:
Last place is 22:9 just to add. Then it's 19:9, it's not good. Then 20:9 pretty bleh. Then 18:9 is not great. Then 16:10 is meh, just to add. Top three are 21:9. Then 17:9. Then 16:9 as the best. Remember those are my preferences, and I have good reasons for my choices.

This above all assumes these displays have the same bezel levels. It wouldn't be fair to compare a 16:9 phone with Slim Bezels against a 20:9 phone with huge bezels. And vice versa.

Anonymous, 13 Apr 2024Such a stupid comment. The point of aspect ratios wider tha... moreHey everyone put your hands together for 70d.
I say that because he clearly cannot, since he has these special thumbs. Thumbs that apparently cannot move. All they do is be annoying and block his videos. That is the entire reason why Samsung went and made their phones in 19:9 aspect ratio, and even Apple followed behind. It's true 70d knows everything, he is right, and everyone else is wrong. And your comments are stoobid, just ask him.

I mean, the consensus for a long time was different. It was that the likes of Samsung could not, or did not, want to make their phones physically smaller. So they changed it up, but having the screen now stretch over areas that used to be occupied by a prominent bezel. They managed to shrink the necessary part of the bezel, and we've gone upto 1: 2.0 - 2.3 ratio on the screen axis. That was what we heard from the businesses, but I guess that was such a stoobid thing; no the truth as 70d revealed to us, was that some people have non-moving thumbs and they value their video watching LOL

There is a reason why it is 21:9 is a king, because Phones goes to pockets while constantly increasing in sizes. The point of aspect ratios wider than 16:9 on phones is that most videos are in 16:9, but when you hold your phone normally your thumbs will cover the left and right sides of the screen. So aspect ratios wider than 16:9 allow you to see full 16:9 videos. It's laughable that this simple fact needs to be explained. LOL.

There are two misconceptions about Xperia 1 display: 4K doesn't make any difference and its not bright enough. Both of them are false.

Xperia 1 sells in super low volume and I can safely say that 95% of commentators here haven't held on in their hand unless they live in south east Asia or UK so misconceptions spread fast without anyone to verify it.

Take 1V and S24 Ultra and put them side by side. Slide the brightness slider all the way to the right on both of them. What do you see? 1V glows about 20% more than S24 Ultra. Now take S24U and tick Additional Brightness option in Display settings, then both phones glow about the same.

While you are at it fire up the browsers on both and go to like amazon website to see the difference between QHD+ device and 4K device. First thin you'll see is that S24U renders fonts larger than 1V and that's because of display DPI. Scale the website view in Samsung Internet of S24U to about 85% and then compare the small type text next to each other. Difference in type clarity is visible, it's not a gamechanger but it's there. Is it worth it? That's whole another question but the difference is visible. Now just for fun you can take S24 with FHD+ display to compare it to 1V and the difference is immediately visible as type on S24 looks blurry even though type is bigger than on 1V

Anonymous, 13 Apr 202416:9 doesn't make sense on 19:5 neither. It only makes... moreExactly this.
The 19:9 aspect ratio that Samsung and Apple hold makes no sense, and the rest of the industry follows them.

What would make sense from the viewpoint of having only two aspect ratios, would be a 1:1 for tablets and a 2:1 for phones. So Apps can rotate 100% for tablets, or have two windows for multitasking. Whilst phones would fit comfortable into pockets and hands, and the programming and to flip horizontal to vertical would be easy. But if you wanted to be a purist, and only have a single aspect ratio for both, it would be like A4 Paper, the Root 2. Or roughly 1:1.4143 aspect ratio where each step size going up has a special relationship with the previous size. It's mathematically beautiful.

Yet, that is a perfect world, and we don't live in one. We live in a darker timeline. We live in the now, and for the now I would recommend something else instead. I would probably recommend a 17:9 aspect ratio. This gives you a full 16:9 picture plus just a little extra. This means in the "extra" you can cut into it, and fit your speakers, cameras, and sensors. You can also curve the corners to make it look aesthetically. Even squeeze in the Notifications Bar and Navigation Buttons. All of that in roughly the same body as a 16:9.phone. Maybe a bit better than a 16:9 phone, yeah better than a 21:9, and a whole lot much better than the lame 19:9 phones of today. If I thought it, others have too. But we can't have nice things, this is a darker timeline.

Long time Xperia user here. Yes the price is stupid, but I work very hard so can afford it. The aspect ratio is perfect for me and great for consuming media on. Sad to see it go. Will they bring back the notification LED? Most missed feature on the V series.

As someone with an xperia 5 III, I think these are good changes. The cameras are good, but these phones are sooo expensive. I just buy them once they're 9-12 months old off ebay, because I cant afford $1200.

The 4k panel is excessive, I don't have one and I still can't see the pixels in my screen no matter how close I get. I can tell the difference between a square period and a round one, based on font differences, so 4k is just a waste.

21:9 is neat except that if I watch a movie I usually do it on a bigger screen. Typing can be quite tricky. Especially in other languages that have more letters.

I wish they'd upgrade the cameras though. A 35-60mm ish camera would be fantastic, or atleast 40-60mm. Most photographers dont use 24mm as their main lens. The 48mm equivalent with the fancy sub-pixel technology was a step in the right direction.
