              Geez people...
              Where are you guys living?
Around here you make a contract and get a phone for only a few bucks. And you can get a new one every 2 years.
So everyone here with a contract (!) gets a new phone every 2 years.
And this phone (let it be 1500 Dollar) will cost you approx. 99 Dollar here with a contract. And in 2 Years the Xperia 1 VIII will cost: 99 Dollar.
Looks like Europe isn't as bad as I read everywhere :)

Is it legit to buy a new phone if you're too fast for your old phone?
Then I could buy a new one every year. Apps are getting updated, OSes are getting updated, they all need more RAM and cpu-power constantly.
I don't want to wait for my phone when using apps.

Anonymous, 07 May 2024Current hardware, even midrange, will be absolutely adequat... moreUmm... no. Not even 3 years if you use your phone as a smartphone. Of course if you use it only to write messages, okay. But newer games don't even run good enough on a normal mid-range phone older than 1 year.
Don't even get me started on 4k/8k video editing.
It all depends on what you're doing with your phone. But I could never use a phone so far for more than 3 years without getting a fit when using a sluggish, laggy mess that phones are after 3 years.
Normally I switch phones after 2 years like anyone else I know. I damit most people get a new phone after 2 years for a different reason: They'll get a new subsidized phone on their contract after 2 years.

It's coming on May 15th, Sony has officially announced it in their YouTube channel

chocowii, 07 May 2024Who needs 7 years of updates when the hardware cant outlive... moreI'd say 7 years is too long, but 4 or 5 years is definitely doable and common for most people. Unless you're a heavy gamer or power user, a current-gen flagship should be more than capable of faithfully serving you lag-free for at least 4 to 5 years.

The main problem is with battery life and accidental damage due to drops. Offering replacement parts for a longer lifecycle means that every phone lives for much longer and actually gets used to its full potential and gets replaced only when it needs to; not because it's being artificially limited by companies who are forcing you to spend much more to upgrade every few years.

If you absolutely need the bleeding edge, go for it. But the overwhelming majority of people don't need it, and usually can't afford it too.

Maintaining support for longer is better for the environment, better for consumers and better for your wallet. It's not taking away your ability to upgrade as soon as the next thing comes out. Seems like a win-win to me.

NONE of these are actually beneficial for anyone - not the consumers and definitely not the environment. Only beneficial to the companies.

Consumers need to start voting with their wallets instead of just being 🐏
