That chip hasn't been announced yet, intriguingly.

tacotaco, 21 May 2024who is demanding high end soc for G series ? its G85 but... moreYea, apparently that is the trend nowadays :/

SD 6G1 would be a good option, on the road to efficiency. The SD4G3 is just an SD695 with a slight overclock... Lenovo is destroying the brand.

Kirisame, 17 May 2024I hope so. Hopefully Adreno 619 on 4 gen 3 will have a cloc... moreI was hoping for Adreno 710 (same as 7s Gen 2 and 6 Gen 1, maybe a bit underclocked). But I am guessing that was too much to expect. Still, even with a higher clocked Adreno 619, the GPU should be better than the Mediatek 7020/7025 (but much lower than 7030 & 7050)

Well, to be fair, the photo quality is not only determined by camera hardware, but also the chipset (and processing algorithm for that matter). Allow me to demonstrate using the DXOMark camera test results of Samsung and Motorola smartphones released in 2023.

The following phones - Motorola Edge 40 Pro, Edge 40 Neo, Samsung S23, S23 FE and A54 - all sport the same/very similar primary camera hardware - 1/1.56" 1.0 μm f/1.8 with PDAF and OIS. However their processors are vastly different. Let's look at the Photo & video scores (primary camera) of these phones as tested by DXOMark.

                                Moto Edge 40 Pro (SD 8 Gen 2) - 137(photo), 135(video)
                                Samsung S23 (SD 8 Gen 2) - 129, 137
                                Samsung S23 FE (Exynos 2200) - 124, 131
                                Samsung A54 (Exynos 1380) - 106, 115
                                Moto Edge 40 Neo (Dimensity 7030) - 102, 116

As can be seen above, the better the processor, the better is the camera output, and the difference can be substantial.

You have also talked about battery life or power efficiency. In this context as well, a chipset with more performance cores would on average be more efficient than one with fewer performance cores (assuming same fabrication node). Modern processors can be power gated to almost zero power, therefore in standby or low performance tasks, the a 4+4 configuration will consume only slightly more power than 2+6 configuration, but as soon as there is a task which can utilize more than 2 performance cores (with each passing year, such tasks are becoming more and more common), the 4+4 configuration becomes more efficient.

In summary, a processor with more no of performance cores is almost always better, even if someone is not a power user.

(On a side note, achieving higher peak performance through clocking higher is not very useful, since it can decrease power efficiency and doesn't do much to improve camera output).

Rock solid cheap and high end processors is not what motorola is looking anyway. If you´re that kind of user you can get a poco phone or a realme or other chinese crap

Allegedly there is a 4 gen 3, 6 gen 2 and 7s gen 3 on the way that QC are testing. Would have preferred the latter two chipsets especially if they were fabricated by TSMC rather than Samsung.

Not everyone is a power user, infact the majority don't even care, good camera and long battery life is what most people looks for, for those power users better look elsewhere

Anders, 17 May 2024Smartphone manufacturers literally aren't even trying ... moreI agree. Should have been a 7s gen 2 or 6 gen 1. Going back to a SD 4 gen 3 for your top end G series phone is a bad look. What will all the other lower variants (G15/G35 etc) have now? Pretty hard to go lower than sub 4 gen 3 chipsets? Dimensity/Unisoc?
