Nokia announces Nokia 6260 slide feature phone, writes S40 history

25 Nov, 2008
The spanking new Nokia 6260 slide easily steals the spotlight with Wi-Fi, GPS, 320 x 480 pixels display, and a 5 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics. We bet that reading those specs the words "dumb phone" or "S40" would never cross you mind. But the new...

can this phone run the traditional 240x320 resolution apps? I'm not being sarcastic, I really want to know..and can anyone predict whether it can play videos in hvga? Why did nokia put such a high res screen?

Great specs on paper Nokia! Too bad I won't be getting this one since most of the apps out there for Nokia smartphones run only on Symbian OS & Series60 UI =P. I doubt this latest version of the S40 can even multi-task as well as even an older N-Series phone. I guess this is why despite all that awesome features, this model doesn't sport the N-Series badge huh? ;P

"What one hang giveth, the other hand taketh away..."

Please Nokia build an ice-cream/candy bar version of this phone running on Symbian v9.3 + Series60 v3 FP2! And don't take away any of the other features while you'e doing that!

Thanks Nokia, for giving yet another reason not to buy an overpriced N-Series phone. Just lower the price of this model still when it finally goes on sale early next year.

So essentially, the new N6260 is the S40 UI, slider version of the currently bang-for-the-buck model in the Nokia lineup, the monobloc N6220C, with added W-Fi & bigger onboard user memory. Awesome. With its reported MSRP, this unit continues the proud tradition of the Nokia N6xxx series as the most feature-packed, bang-for-the-buck models in the Nokia arsenal.

One can easily buy a gold plated 2.5mm to 3.5mm adaptor for less than $10. I did that recently for a Nokia 6500 Slide I bought, so that I could use studio-grade headphones with it. The adaptor works and very well.

Again, I reiterate the same question I posed in the comments section of the N79 & N6220 reviews: What is the point of getting an N-Series if all the features are now also available in the supposedly lower-end non-N-series lineup??? Somebody said "better build quality" & "Wi-Fi/WLAN support", but the former reason is not important since all phones would eventually become obsolete in a few years, and most of the N-series & E-series also have plastic shells (just w/ metallic-colored paint) and/or cheap, unergonomic keypads. The "Wi-Fi" argument is also now invalid with the early '09 release of this new N6260 slider, which just proves that it's the N6xxx line that is consistently the most bang-for-the-buck lineup in the whole Nokia catalog. And this phone doesn't even run on the newest Symbian v9.3 OS and the latest Series60 v.3, Feature Pack 2 UI.

In short, the N-Series should be revamped with new, killer features unavailable in the lower lines and/or lower its pricing!

Charging via microUSB??? Whoa! Is this a first for Nokia?

But what's with the 2.5mm audio jack? Why can't they just put a 3.5mm in there???

i think mobile companies need to start selling customize mobiles where people can choose which one they want in their pocket, where people can choose its color, screen-size, type(fold, bar, slide) etc.. just like assembling a pc.

some of us here actually like the conservative designs that Nokia is putting out there, even if they all look similar, but then again, don't Samsung, and Moto phones all look the same too?? All they need to do is work on the materials used. The phone looks great and I don't want to see designs like Moto or SE has.

it would have been great phone if it accompanied a xenon flash, 30 fps video and a candybar design, something like series 40 n82
