They are (or were) the standard before Windows and Linux GUI's became commonplace, which had custom/proprietary software (designed for specific tasks) running on top of it. But rarely would there be a need to have an entire operating system designed for a specific task/use.

I wish manufacturers would stop selling phones on Gingerbread. Seriously, some crappy manufacturers are still doing it it. I cringe

Can you open email with gingerbread yes, can you use facebook yes, If you are thinking of playing games which are not supported on earlier versions probably your hardware wont be able to run the game either

"Android is very fragmented in both graphics chips and Android version" ??

that mean even Windows is fragmented... :) :/
win 95, win98, win 32000 are all being used, mainly because the hardware is very old, and the system is **only** being used for a VERY simple use, like a print server, or POS unit... it does not crash or get attacked, due to the age of the whole thing.. Why 'upgrade to the latest' when is has been working without problems for 10 years??

Android phones are the same - people want very cheap phones, that are not powerful enough to run the latest OS - they just want ** a phone ** :)

It shows the best versions were
                  1.Gingerbread
                  2.Jelly Beans

Fragmentation can be issue for devs but not for users

Android is very fragmented in both graphics chips and Android version. That's why you see so many comments about force closes and freezes in Google Play store.
