Its not surprising to see this in the news.
First of all, when you have a market dominated by IOS and Android, anything new which wants a bite of the market share need to promote the OS differently, but the guys at Mozilla have not done so.
Coming to the hardware, when you have android phones dominating bottom mid and top sectors of the market and apple phones dominating the Exclusive end of the market, its really hard for someone like amazon to burst into the scene with a phone with lack lustre specs and an OS which really doesnt catch the eye.

An Amazon branded phone is like an eBay branded phone... They are like yard-sale places, a good place to find cheap and hand-me-down stuffs. But branded to a phone?!!! That's like a phone with a "Yard-sale" logo... Buy a Bluetooth headset and hide that shiz in your pocket when you have to use the "Amazon" phone.

If they make the screen 6.4 like my Xperia Z Ultra and also make it thin as a piece of hair like my Xperia Z Ultra I will be one for work one for home and one for the gym.
No one should use a thick phone like iPhone with such a small screen.

The failure of Amazon Fire mainly is main caused by:
1) It does not allow Google Play Store
This is really a big mistake ever made by Amazon!
In addition Amazon must improve in below areas in order to be competitive:
Amazon should get rid of the physical home button from Fire.
Amazon should increase the screen size to 5"~5.25".
Amazon should add Micro SD card slot that supports up to 128GB.
Amazon should increase the capacity of battery to at least 3000 mAh

this is what i expected they released a phone with a hyper parallax screen good for a few things, people mostly use google maps and other things unless the screen worked on every app and they could use android apps fully on it, it would not take. the firefly thing is just google now, if a song is on i push GN or say ok google and it tells me the song and offers a download for google account play store. I can search with a google pic as well and also use it to translate by taking a pic and highlight the text i want in my language. plus it was super priced with att exclusive we all said it would be the end of the phone you cant really do exclusive carriers in this day and age.

Amazon made one big mistake, going beyond the superb eInk based monochrome Kindles that do what they do brilliantly. (We have a Paperwhite Mk2.) The majority of people come from PCs that are complex to use, so a garden walled version of Android is pointless. iOS may be garden walled but it does not put up a barrier to itself. Most people who like simple devices have younger relatives who can customise their regular Android or iOS devices, so it's a waste to buy an Amazon colour device that does less when you need it to, just so make people spend money. They should stick to daylight readable eReaders, and get a colour model out!

Their phone pricing differs from their tablet pricing that have top specs unlike the firephone flagship with the 720p screen in 2014
