Majority of people in the US have iPhones, I guessing for its size and portability. If Sony were to release a high powered, compact phone, they could steal some of Apple's market share while increasing their own sales.
If they were to release the Z3 Compact on a carrier "subsidized" contract (this is what went wrong with the Z1), Sony would likely be able to challenge Apple's monopoly on small phones. Combine it with some better marketing on Sony's part and the Z3 Compact has a good chance of success in the US market.

They should be pushing the Z3 Compact rather than the Z3. For most people the Z3 Compact is better.

Z3a for At&t
Z3s for Sprint
Z3v for Verizon
