India is an interesting market because:
1) there's a huge untapped emerging potential
2) Phones are bought unsubsidized at full price
3) India is very price-sensitive
4) But people still like their tech
...so it's a huge race for lower-end and mid-tier OEMs so this will definitely be something to watch.
I wouldn't care much about the Jolla launching in say, Europe or wherever.

jolla is gesture based...very fast UI compared to conventional OSes like IOS / android.... take some 5 tasks, try doing it in IOS/android and do the same in jolla, you will know the difference.....it requires minimal navigation..... I can close the open apps in jolla with my eyes closed, you try doing this in any other mobile phone OS....

Anonymous, 20 Sep 2014I'll definately buy this phone, after all its not about the... moreJolla's speciality is not only just UI...its also the very innovative TOH (theotherhalf).... automatically changes themes based on the otherhalf you attach to the phone...already solar based TOH and TOHOLED are available online, though its not from the Jolla company...its something really cool that distinguishes itself from other conventional phone...its like having infinite devices on hand.....soon we can expect official TOH devices....

It's about BALANCE and to... moreThe Neo900 seems like a lost cause, it could be fun for an additional device but i dont see the justification for pouring money into a hobby device. Anyway, the Neo900 isnt trying to be the most popular, i think they are very aware that its a niche product for die hard GNU/Linux geeks and N900 fans.
I reacted hardest to the 1GB flash storage, with only 512MB RAM and so low storage are we meant to put the swap partition/file on the memory card? I think it should be 4GB storage or preferably 8, the system+swap partitions were around 5GB on N900.

Tell that to all the smartphone owners who doesnt have PC. You are so good in dictating what other people should like and not like, are you some kind of guru that we should all listen to and meditate, anbd keep on repeating "this is all we need coz our great Guru told us so".
I do however agree that processors doesnt need to be S805, but as a former N9 user i recognize the need for something better than this mediocre dualcore and only 1GB RAM, even the old N9 had 1GB RAM. The issue is still the display, very subpar for this price, i have used qHD devices and i honestly dont find them to be even one bit better than WVGA, its only at 720p that things start to happen. But ok, go ahead and buy, hope your arms are long enough to hold your Jolla at long enough distance for your short eyeballs to be able to focus and you can enjoy the "experience".
I miss Maemo5, MeeGo wasnt that great on the N9, which had uninspiring performance, hope the "Jolla 2" phone will offer something better and i will come back to the pure Linux experience i loved in Maemo5.

It's about BALANCE and to arrive to that you do need a solid baseline for hw reqs. And what comes close to that at the end of it all is the RRP... what's the value proposition for the end user?
Don't get me wrong I fully agree on your points about computing power, OEMs and planned obsolescence but lines has to be drawn somewhere. Consider the fall of Symbian. It wasn't the OS, it was the devices it's that simple truth. Symbian was hogtied down to resistive screen, abysmal SoC and cost conservative RAM amounts on multiple models (hint:- it's the SAME DAMNED THING just differentiated by screen sizes or cam modules!) in a "series" of a product portfolio. Move then to post Maemo and N900... the kind of a suicidal device move that shouldn't have been executed the way it was; remember that it was supposed to be Nokia's answer to the iPhone at the time....Result? That was the second last nail to its fast forming coffin.
So you put a $450 Jolla side by side to any competing same RRP'ed devices right now and tell me about the balance.
Another example the "resurrection" of N900 aka Neo900. Put it short, a -slightly- improved N900 with ambitions to run full GNU/Linux distro with the tagline "We deliver the hardware, you choose the OS". Check the specs draft and let's discuss that thing's feasibility on the LONG TERM.
Like I said...balance...

Nice for India,its garnering all the right attention & every major OEM is well aware about the Indian Market since they obviously study it darn well.Plus its not an emerging market anymore,its already an evolved market.Hence its pretty natural that any major player out there making anything from light bulbs to phones will like to have a slice of this billion dollar economy that stems from this billion plus population of the country!

And yeah if you can sell it well in India. You May sell it anywhere. Probably because if you can ccapture the mind of Indians probably they can do anything. Its very difficult to break that mentality coz people trust only few reliable brand like Nokia and samsung, but look how xioami captured market coz they prices it right and they created the bang. And see without advertisement even people from not so technical background or people who dont even care to think about hardware and just Bout android version were talking about XIOAMI. And that makes it something big.

Indian market is definately be a warzone for os since most of us indians get bored easily n love to try new things if they r correctly priced ...the major factor for sailfish os to emerge will be proper advertising n marketing ...wish em luch

Too things important for Indians. Also Moto had some seriously premium build quality even on the Moto E. Same goes for Nokia. It's an Indian favorite, where a customer would just say "If I need to spend 8k on a phone I might as well just pick a nokia lumia 520". Apple is also doing incredibly well here. But with Android One and the whole "emerging market" rubbish. India will be reflected as a third world country, when it's clearly not.

Yet when I walk into the Indian Mumbai Local train. Everyone has a samsung galaxy S4, iPhone, Samsung Notes. I, for one would not buy the Jolla, simply because I would be taken for owning something not "status" friendly. Please really try to understand the Indian Urban mentally, we will love to buy stuff we can't afford which is why 0% Interest on EMI's were banned last year. We are the same people who pay 3000-4000 Rs for a night out.
