Xiaomi Pinecone chipset gets its own trailer, starring World Memory Champion

Peter, 23 February 2017

Xiaomi recruited Wang Feng to star in the trailer of its upcoming chipset, Pinecone. Yes, a trailer for a chipset - Xiaomi is sparing no expense to drive up the hype.

Anyway, Feng is a two-time World Memory Champion and he shows off his skills by memorizing and then recalling 100 groups of numbers (each group consisting of several digits) He even wrote them down in the correct order!

This is certainly an impressive feat and as fine a way of teasing a chipset as we could think of. The Pinecone itself will come in two versions - V970 and V670 - which are comparable to a Kirin 960 and Kirin 650 respectively. Or Exynos 8890 and 7580, if you prefer.

The new chipset is coming out next week on February 28. Xiaomi will not be attending MWC, unfortunately, we had hopes of seeing the new chip in person.

Looks promising on paper, hopefully it does become all it's hyped up to be. Crucially, I really hope they'll go open-source enough that it gets a healthy developer community going.
