6 January 2014
We recently had the chance to get some hands-on time with Sony's new flagship in miniature, the Xperia Z1 Compact. The little fella packs flagship-grade specs into a much smaller footprint than most of today’s premium smartphones...

It's organic pixels on a thin film that create their own light source when connect to a power source.
I'm sure there is a way to get one water proof. Just would take more work and probably time. I understand why they did it.

That is why the S4 Active's screen is TFT LCD like Sony screens, although the screen on the Compact is IPS LCD!

First on water ... moreYeah Samsung may have been the first to make a mini variant of their product but its far from being a mini flag ship when you have crappy specs on it. IMO sony will be the first one to have a mini version flagship with really impeccable specs and it will revolutionise the mini flagship market. Hopefully other phone makers will follow suit and not make 2nd rated mini phones and put big price tags on them.

I think its safe to say that a 5' screen is a norm nowadays. I guess at the end of the day its the individuals preference that matters and the preference now is a 5' screen, at least from where I'm coming from.

So I also wonder to what extend this apply in real life...

But having had the SGS3 and then Xperia Acro S... I actually missed the deep blacks... but almost nothing else. Sony really does a great job with Bravia Engine and I guess with X-reality + Triluminous display tech, because they really make pictures and movies vibrant and punchy... almost to amoled levels...

So this is not what bothers me... I am actually bother by the fact that they now use On-screen buttons, and MHL took over microHDMI so I will need to get an adapter and I will have to plug to the wall to use it...

Oh well... it's either MHL or Slimport nowadays... and its either a 4~4.3" or a 5" screen for flagships...

The water test showed the normal version of the S4 lasting almost two and a half hours in a glass of water before shutting off, going in rice, and coming out fine.

Anonymous, 16 Jan 2014Water proofing and switch to thicker LCD from Amoled. And s... morean LCD is needed in a water resistant phone, since AMOLED are more sensitive to water damage...

Also take a look at the back of those phones... you will find that the Z1/Z1 Compact have the camera module OVER the screen (if you can imagine the screen on the back of the phone)... while the Samsung Galaxy S4 Active have the camera module directly behind the screen...
This happens because the sensors, lens quantity, etc are very big on Z1/compact, and basically the module go almost through the whole phone's thickness...

If Sony were to put the camera directly behind their screens to make a smaller top/bottom bezels... the phone would need to be ~11 mm thick or near... (my Acro S is design like this, thick but small top/bottom bezels). A recent example of this is the Xperia ZL, one of the smallest 5" screen regarding bezels, but it is quite thick because of the camera directly behind the screen (actually the camera protrudes a bit)

Anyway I really do not mind the size of this phone, while I do wish for a 4.5" flagship like this, I will happily wait with this one on my hands.

My experience with couple sony phone (tx,z,zr) all give a of lot of heat, really not comfortable to hold (my lastest phone xperia M, i'm tired with big phone)
Now im using moto razr M, this phone generate a lot less heat compare to xperia m, even with more high spec & compact body
Actually im really interested with z1 compact, but I'm affraid this phone get really hot just like other xperia.
Maybe i just go for moto droid mini or its successor, if my razr M need retired :D

I agree that 4.5~4.7" would be awesome but I understand if some footprint was needed to be sacrificed...

Remember that the Galaxy S4 Active is still bigger than regular S4. So waterproofing does take a bit of space... And IMO is totally worth it.

The whole point is not smaller screen but smaller phone! What I am trying to outline here is that if sony want to use 4'3 inch screen then the size of the phone could be smaller or sony could just do it other way around by putting larger screen such as 4'5 to fit this current phone size.. Dude what the point of having 4 inch screen in large phones such as z1...!! Think!

Mobile-review's Murtazin mentioned in one of his articles that Sony use low quality TFT alongside with IPS in Z1. Also he said that this is not market depended and possible to find Z1-s with TFT everywhere. So, I hope it won't happen with Compact and it will be packed true trlmns IPS. I like compact
