ZTE Nubia Z9 review: A disappearing act

17 August, 2015
Screen bezels are an inevitable imperfection of modern smartphones. That is unless you get the ZTE Nubia Z9, the phone that magics the side bezel away. This mobile David Blaine has flagship ambitions with a design – and price! – to match.

okay phone, the display is nice, but it has 2 huge flaws:

          - very easy to scratch, definitely not gorilla glass or scratch resistant glass. Kind of defeats the purpose of having a stunning bezel less phone if you need to always keep it in a full plastic case
          - non replaceable battery, with the phone heating a lot, I do not foresee the battery to have a long life, so it's going to be an issue very soon. no ZTE service center outside of China, so I hope I'll be able to find a battery on ebay and be able to replace it myself.

i used this phone for almost 4 months.. and the chipset simply overheat instantly on heavy graphical apps and games..this phone has almost zero solution to cool it's hardware.
the software is very sluggish over some time of usage and un-optimized..

if you look for nice looking phone that turns people heads.. this is the one.
but it lacks everything else in good phones..

I love the Nubia series phones, their build quality is excellent, but it is indeed disheartening to see how ZTE stooped down to bad marketing gimmicks on Z9, on the lower priced Classic edition they have knowingly restricted 4K video recording to 24fps while the higher priced Exclusive and Elite editions record 4K video at 30fps, yeah I know that they are doing this so as to lure the customers to buy the higher priced variants but seriously such marketing gimmicks are truly pathetic, they are literally playing with the trust of customers buy doing this.

I bought the elite version of Z9 and the main differences I found other than the obvious 4GB ram, fingerprint scanner and golden colour is the ability to record 4K video in 30fps like its competitors. It seems that this is some sort of marketing gimmick of ZTE wherein they restrict the Classic edition to record 4K videos at just 24fps while the Elite and Exclusive editions record 4K videos at 30fps. It seems that ZTE wants to force the buyers to for the higher priced Elite and Exclusive, really a bad marketing gimmick.

AnonD-432523, 22 Aug 2015It's a good phone to buy but you have to compromise on quality I own this phone and its build quality is superior to Huawei, LG and Samsung. the gap between screen and bezel is very fine and the metal is flawlessly polished.

The reason they say this phone is "too thick" is because there are many other phones with the same size battery that are thinner or a bigger battery that is the same thickness. Also I love the look of the phone and it looks to be a good one from ZTE only thing I wish was different was because the phone has no side bezels I wish they made the top and bottom bezels just a little smaller just cause the way they are now make the phone look weirdly too long

In a couple of years, I've never seen such an innovation in mobile phone era. Most manufactures battling in spec wars. Good job ZTE!

I hope Z10 will remove the upper bezels too.

So Gsmarena thinks 8.9mm is too thick. When motorola phones are way thicker than this phone. I smell a conspiracy.

"...to some it's just a marketing gimmick that doesn't warrant the toll on battery life..."
... AND toll on (game-) performance since most content is made with FHD (1080P) in mind.

Not to mention that I'll skip 2015. Wake me up when the Cortex-A72 beasts arrive.
