Sony Xperia Z5, Z5 Compact and Z5 Premium hands-on: Sony at IFA 2015

02 September, 2015
Sony’s back, and it returns with aplomb. The company has brought us an entire Xperia Z5 family of smartphones ranging from the Xperia Z5 Compact for small pockets to the 5.5-inch Xperia Z5 Premium with the industry’s first 4K display in a production smartphone.

Nice to see Sony putting a fight, other brands have impressive phones out there. Samsung is a powerhouse, Apple phones are also great (i think Android is better though), Motorola lately bring great phones at great prices.

I still prefer Sony for the beautiful design, truly impressive specs like Z5P, great quality. The Z5P is the phone ive been waiting Sony would introduce, most likely next phone just holding off on reviews, I agree SD810 is a potential worry for heat issues and battery impact... Camera, waterproof, hi-res audio and display are killers... Hope Sony can get it right on display downscaling, they confirmed 4k resolution will only work when compatible content is used

Nice to see that on GSM Arena, one can still read fairly and intelligently written reviews with the occasional sprinkle of humor helping us through a triple phone review.

I was keen on the Z5 Premium for use in VR applications ala Google Cardboard, but given that the SD820 SoC to feed the extra pixels isn't available till next year, I might just get the regular Z5 now and wait for the Z5+ Premium or Z6 Premium in 2016.

I don't much like the mirror finish on the back either and I'm not interested in black or gold. I like Sony's phone design best in white, which has the added benefit that fingerprints are MUCH pretty much invisible, compared to the total mess they make out of the black one.

I hope Sony fixed whatever caused the back of my Z2 to just pop off without any apparent reason.

Currently have the z1 which i love and works perfectly and i can't believe that even though it's been released for some time it still got updated to 5.1.1. At first a i was reluctant to sony because my mother had an xperia p which even though was similarly speced to the s2 it worked very bad, but i gave it a shot and was pleasantly surprised and i am amazed by how long the battery lasts. I'm definitely considering the z5 for my next phone and i love that the xperia z line has shutter keys for the camera. My single complaint would be the fact that the battery is not removable, after 2 years for 20 euros you could get a new battery and have the phone last as long as in its first day. And amoled screen would have been nice i believe that amoled has the best colors and everything on amoled looks great but i could get over this. If they could get amoled on their phones i truly believe that sony would have the best phone on the market, performance/design/display/camera/battery life.

                        My Christmas present Z5P 2015.

Yes, my brother had the Xperia Z1 compact and Z3 compact and his experience (or should I say Xperiance) with them was excellent. Z1 got him a really solid battery life and performance like 5 inch+ flagships. The Z1's display sucked a bit so I decided to buy him the Z3 compact. The Z3c was almost near perfection, the display had been improved significantly and battery life was off the charts. Max 2-3% discharge per day on standby and 8-9 hour on-screen time for him has made me jealous. Now, I had the Galaxy S3, S4 and S5 and then I switched to the Z3. I basically found the near-perfect device. Sony has easily stolen 2 loyal ex-Samsung fanboys' hearts. Sony Xperia FTW!

Why choose sony? Because samsung and apple has a sony made hardware inside inside of it...

I have never owned a Sony device before, but I think it may be time to give the compact a try. Does anyone have any experience with buying sony phones in the USA? I dont do the carrier subsidies, but I wonder does the Sony retail store carry them? Also do the phones ever receive any price cut? For example I know Motorola has had a valentines day sale the past couple of years.

Martin Reeves, 10 Sep 2015My one simple question is... WILL IT ACTUALLY BE WATERPROOF... moreI have z3c almost a year now.. You should be responsible when using it underwater. There is a pressure test which will give you guarantee that water would not enter your phone. Nevertheless, sony warns users that they are not liable on any water damage. You could ask : whats the use of advertising the "waterproof"? The answer is simple. It is because many users would swim with their phone carelessly and would ask warranty. If this happens Sony will go bankrupt. That is why Samsung only release 1 waterproof phone each generation. Also, why would you use your phone underwater? If you want to take a picture give it extra protection like putting it in ziplock. The waterproofness of this phone is for emergency use only. But if you want to swim with it use pressure test, or you can tape the falps, or google on how to PROPERLY use the phone underwater.
