Sony Xperia X review: Rated X

20 May, 2016
There's a shift of command in the house of Xperia. The Sony Xperia X and its two siblings are taking over from the Xperia Z. A dynasty has come to an end. We hear the C and M families are being put out to pasture as well, soon it will be all X top to bottom.

!00% true. I guess the production cost is less than one fourth from the price.

- Lower specs. it always means cheaper component.
- Cheap build.

everything is also cheaper.
- Software. The lightest modded ui. everything is still stock. it even doesnt need software department. a single newbie launcher dev is enough. Cheap.
- Poor marketing.

AnonD-531620, 29 May 2016Wow! Check out youtube videos of xperia x taking on flagshi... moreIndeed, this is exactly Sony's problem. Trying to charge what they (possibly correctly) think the device is worth but without first offering it at an attractive price that will encourage substantial purchases on value-per-spec basis alone. Sony has dedicated fans but they won't win any new ones if they don't tempt people with a solid device at eye-catching prices.

Tann is right about one very telling fact: rarely do I ever see Sony fans bashing other devices in other threads. The reverse can't be said. Perhaps there's just a little "confirmation bias" going on, although I wouldn't know - with the exception of the [original] HTC Desire I've only had Sony phones since before they joined with Ericsson. And proud of it ;)

Wow! Check out youtube videos of xperia x taking on flagship handsets. It matches or out performs most flagships in speed tests including g5, m10, p9 iPhone 6s etc.
Only the Samsung s7 actually beats it outright, time to give sony a bit more respect for the refinements they've made.

That said it's still too expensive, same price as s7 and no headphones or fast charger supplied with it.

Slash €100 of the price and put a fast charger and some high res headphones in the box and it will sell millions.

Not all apps are equal, maybe x get lower res and lower fps.

mister, 28 May 2016For me Xperia x is à flagship not à midrange.... moreAgreed....
Only thing making this phone not flagship worthy is cpu performance in gaming, and even that is on par to last years sd808 flagship devices.
              Everything else is just...flagshippy excellent.
              :-)

-H.265 has nothing to do with 4K video rec. 4K is not tech related right? A phone will record 4K, if Soc, sensor software support it.
-Grey was right, it doesnt mean much. No need to brag about it.

The picture from exmor camera. Dat details. Noise is inevitable but minimal. And I have tried it at the shop, it's really fast on moving objects. I could say it's the most practical feature on a camera (alongside Samsung S7 i guess).

I wanna see my shots on desktop and try cropping, but the manager said I'm pushing my luck hehe :D

Reaper, 27 May 2016at least we share in one point, that "in general" numbers a... moreI only saw the s7 one and the s7 performed better. But speed tests aren't what you use to compare a midrange chipset to a high end one. You have to see how well it can actually play the most demanding apps/games, and how long it takes before it starts to feel dated. You could use a flagship from 2014 and it would still do a good job and play most apps, but if you were using a midranger from 2014 it would really start to show its age by now.

The sd650 does have two a72 cores so it should do decently, for now, but ultimately it doesn't compare to a proper flagship.

Another thing to remember is that not all apps are equal. For example take Clash royale, on lower spec phones it has less special effects, and has a lower resolution, to make it run easier. The xperia x is still quite high performing so I wouldn't think this is the case, except for the lower resolution being an obvious factor.

                        https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/4K_resolution

Tann Hauser, 27 May 2016I really.... {facepalm} I explained twice, admin delete... moreA 5 MP camera CANNOT record in 4k. Even if the SoC and software allow it to.

In order to record 4k videos, the camera has to be at least roughly 8 MP.

                            Listen carefully:

                            SoC supports 4k
Google supports camera with camera2 api
                            Camera2 api supports h.265/h.264 coders(encode/decode function)
                            Phone supports h.265 coder
                            Camera sensor picks up signal
                            H.265/h.264 encodes signal to 4k
Phone puts h.265 encoded video into mp4 format
Mp4 4k video plays via h.265/h.264 supported videoplayer app.

4k video is not tech related, its software related.
Even 5 mpx cam can record in 1080p, or even 4k, if supported by SoC, camera api, videocoder, phone codec support...

I still dont get explanation about the relation of the device that features h.265 with 4K.

You said h.265 mean it can record 4K. Low end Xperia E5 and honors also has h.265, still believe it will records 4K.. LOL
