Samsung Galaxy Note8 hands-on review: First impressions

23 August 2017
The successor to the Samsung Galaxy Note 4/5 is finally here - meet the Galaxy Note8. Wait, what? Okay, Europeans didn’t get the Note5 because Samsung, and we all know how the Note7 lived a shorter product life than it deserved. So in a way, a few of us Note lovers have been stuck with three-year-old Notes, looking at some poor S-Pen-less S7 edges and S8s to fill the void.

that's why i do not change my Note 4 still, and will switch only to a decent phone with the FLAT screen. Certainly not Samsung.

I like the note series. Helps a lot if you needs productivity (much reading, replying emails with attachments, signing PDF papers...etc ).
I do not like the tall design (2:1 tatio, almost) and the curved screen is easily breakable.
My work colleague his S8 was on the disk, trying to reach some papers, he dropped it and the screen cracked, still functional though.

I am an Android User.. an Ex samsung user, however after my experience with S8+, i am surely never buying samsung again. My phone screen broke when it slipped and fell on car floor mat and that too in case. Switched to Sony, i am happy to have bezels rather poor quality phones.

AnonD-373654, 25 Aug 2017Its note 8 vs Iphone 8... nobody else is even close enoughSorry. The iphone is the one out of the comp. V30 with oled could come close and XZP is brilliant still

Anonymous, 25 Aug 2017no Dolby Vision am not buying itReally? Isn't all of the smartphones currently don't have Dolby Vision except LG G6? Unless u want to wait until EVERY smartphone to have it then u buy a smartphone eh?

If you too lazy to scroll, these the sums up of people comments here about galaxy note 8:

1 So the telephoto is a smaller sensor with only 1um vs 1.44um pixels and a vastly smaller aperture of f2.4 compared to f1.7

2 No matter how good the phone is, as long as they put the damn fingerprint at that location (again), i'll just no.

3 It's a failure as compared to s8+. battery 3,500mAh. Note 8 gets a REDUCED battery life for a LARGER screen. Only 3,300 mAh.
Samsung has successfully created a flop...AGAIN!

4 No 3D audio recording, but at least nothing blows up...

5 Larger screen with smaller than the already "too small" battery of the S8+

6 Well, i like the Note 7's design more than this, this one is too boxy and rectangular like Sony

7 The only things hate it about Note 8 the desgin kinda look like Samsung refrigerator :(

8 lol... 3300mAh on a "professional" device for power users. Cool

9 I like big screen phones with proper ratio. The 18:9 screen is way too tall for my preference.

10 You are so right about it. I find this ratio ugly and wonder if what we can benefit from a tall screen phone. I would prefer a little bit wider. (16:9)

11 Primary camera sensor smaller, secondary sensor tiny. Thank you, but that will be a fourth year of no Note for me then...

12 Camera design at behind look bad. And fingerptint placement is just stup*d

                        13 Still no stereo speakers on a $1000 phone..lame!

14 Samsung & Apple - expensive and look at me attitude..
Buy something else and set yourself free.

15 To be honest, the I find the Edge screen really annoying... I always misstype a Q or a P when trying to text.

16 Man.. all them samsung fanboys in denial here... Say what you want, it still is god damn expensive. $1k+ for a phone is a lot of cash no matter how you sugarcoat it. I bought my 2014 13" Macbook pro laptop for the same price man.

17 Now the Note 8 us out, it still has that awful edge, it still has that horribly placed fingerprint scanner, now even with an awful black colour scheme, on all colours, to make it stick out like a sore thumb and annoy you even more. As if the horrible placement, where you need one meter fingers to reach it, wasn't bad enough already.

18 To add insult to injury, the Note 8 has an even smaller battery, 3300 mAh only, so battery life will be even worse. Especially since it has a much bigger screen, 6.3"

19 Wow, so I thought everybody likes Samsung..

Now I'm reading lots of criticisms for their faults.

20 Samsung has just turned around and become like Apple.. Larger screen with smaller than the already "too small" battery of the S8+

                        So educate yourself on those

Anonymous, 24 Aug 2017No. But what is apparent is you have zero reading comprehen... moreWell you say that their optimization is exaggerated, yet it performs amazingly. And if indeed they don't optimize that well, then it's their chips that are responsible for the great performance. I have never had any crashing problems on my iphones, nor have my friends. But we all have issues on android phones from LG G6, Samsung S7 to Asus zenphone. I have no allegiance to phones nor any bias towards any specific brand. It's just a tool and everyone has different needs. There is however no doubt that iPhones are the fastest and most stable phones.

Pine cone, 25 Aug 2017 The edge is totally useless. Huh,edge sense? I diable it t... moreTrue, the edge is totally useless. Never used it once in the half year that I had my 27th edge now.
The edge only has disadvantages. Content that is close to the screen border, on the edge, is hard to reach and interact with, including the keyboard and keys on the edge (e.g. q, 1 left and p, 0 right).
It's not rare you will have phantom inputs from accidentally touching the edge.
The edge makes the phone super fragile, like an egg shell.
Without edge, there would've been more space internally. The S7 edge is supposed to have a 3600 mAh battery, but I didn't notice anything of that. Battery life was just the same as with the Sony Xperia Z5 which I had before, which only had a 2900 mAh battery. It was no but better.
The only good thing I can say about it is that it didn't explode. At least not yet. It does frequently get quite warm, however, and on very warm days, it can even get downright hot, resulting in the battery discharging much faster than it already does.
I'd say that this, together with the poor battery life, only shows how notoriously bad Samsung is with batteries.

Now the Note 8 us out, it still has that awful edge, it still has that horribly placed fingerprint scanner, now even with an awful black colour scheme, on all colours, to make it stick out like a sore thumb and annoy you even more. To add insult to injury, the Note 8 has an even smaller battery, 3300 mAh only, so battery life will be even worse. Especially since it has a much bigger screen, 6.3" instead of the 5.5" of the S7 edge, which will suck the battery dry much faster still.

I'm wondering who wants to pay 1000 EUR for Note 8...

its Extra Fragile curved display with Super Glares and Fragile "Try Not To Break Me!" glass back, that adds to its heavy 200 g weight, i think its so against traditional galaxy note users needs and usability principles...
