LG V30 hands-on review: First impressions

31 August 2017
LG’s brief flirtation with OLED gave us the Flex phones, but now it’s a long-term commitment. Yet – surprisingly – it’s not the screen, which covers 82% of the front of the LG V30, that is the star attraction. Instead, the much-improved dual camera is the main focus of this generation.

As I already said, LCD screens are overall better than AMOLED screens. All AMOLED screens burn in over time. And it not only means that you can recognize an UI element burned it, but it also means discoloration of the AMOLED screen. The pixels and subpixels aren't used equally, therefore they degrade at a different rate. The different colored subpixels also have different lifespan. So the screen will have color distortion, unequally distorted areas, etc. The new features in S8 like on-screen buttons, always-on display and the non-standard 18:9 screen aspect ratio makes the burn-in problem to appear faster. The AMOLED also dims faster.
The AMOLED screens also have the inferior PenTile subpixel arrangement to delay the burn-in. It doesn't solve the burn-in issue, just delays it a bit. However, it creates another problem: pixelated display. It has less pixels than what is advertised. A PenTile screen requires more nominal resolution to hide the pixelation. An RGB LCD is sharper than a PenTile AMOLED at the same resolution and size.
The new, good quality LCD screens have similar viewing angle, blacks, contrast, power consumption, ... (everyhting that you listed) to AMOLED. AMOLED screens are oversaturated.
So despite AMOLED has slight advantage in some cases, LCD is better overall.

Because LCD doesn't get image retention or have it's own issues. And as a unique one to LCD that doesn't effect Oled....Backlight issues.
Is that seriously your only reason for hating on Oled despite it being superior in almost every way? Color accuracy or intensity, contrast, reflectance, sunlight visibility, brightness, overall power consumption, blacks, response times, light bleeding, light uniformity....etc etc. And the larger the display becomes the more apparent these visual advantages become.

but.....Oled might burn in on some rarer occasions. Who cares if LCD has backlight issues, image retention, pixel issues, and anything else that can effect a display. It's inferior but superior for that.

And fyi. Out of at least 15 phones with Amoled that my family, friends, and I have had...Even one from 2009 that was used quite a lot. Which by the way still has great blues, good brightness, no burn in, and still usable outside.... Out of all of them only one got a slight burn in.

It's not going to compare to a legitimately smaller and lighter device.
And it's inerds are alright. But cut corners and costs too much for what they offer compared to others.

Innards look pretty good too after seeing the tear down reviews. Can't wait to try one in person and compare to the S8s and Note 8.

Yes the V30 is technically smaller than the Note8. But the V30 is by no means a small device. It is still a larger, heavy all glass device.

And most of the quality is known. Talking about things like ram, front camera, back camera, maybe with display though that could be an early batch thing. And for the average person might not be as bad as made out to be. But still would show the difference of time and cost between the two.

I'm liking the V30 a lot, but... Does it bother anyone else that the V30 has no side power button? Do we really have to give a "reach-around" on the fingerprint scanner to unlock and lock the screen? Not sure if that's a deal breaker but it does seem inconvenient. I wonder if there's a virtual home button to wake it at least? Or a long press to a volume button?

(And forget comparisons for a minute, personally I think the Note 8's size and weight are a liability, that heavy, large, fragile thing is going to get dropped by lots of people.)

Note 8 is curved but that doesn't distort. But it's also higher quality and bigger for viewing.
V30 may be cheaper but there is good reason. It's cheaper. It cuts more corners and and costs less to make. It's actually more over priced even though it's cheaper.
The fingerprint is better placed but still not perfect

Mehran, 02 Sep 2017Why should I buy it instead of the note 8?!1. It's lighter and shorter than the Note 8, so it can be used with one hand.
                                  2. No curved OLED to distort video.
                                  3. It's cheaper.
                                  4. Accessible fingerprint reader.

JIO sim in india, requires LTE band 3, 5, 40. This phone lacks LTE band 40, because of which, JIO sim will NOT operate smoothly.
                                        BEWARE, JIO sim lovers.
