Sony Xperia 5 hands-on review

Sony now is the Apple of the Droids, in terms of pricing of course.

Anonymous, 05 Sep 2019The Xperia 5 is inferior to the P30 in far too many ways. ... moreWhy do you care about height when one handed use is width mainly width.
You can swipe down the notification bar with gestures...

Also SD855 has a much better GPU than the Kirin 980

Anonymous, 05 Sep 2019The Xperia 5 is inferior to the P30 in far too many ways. ... moreP30 has worse quality screen, poor video recording skills (as bad as midranges) , worse audio. Much slower updates, weak gpu, notch screen.

You cannot compare the price P30 is now, because it has been out 6 months.
After 6 months Xperia 5 will be below $700 too.

what many people dont understand is it has good audio qualities both in headphones and in loudspeaker... nowadays phones like that are becoming rare...

I used to love sony phones but now there's absolutely nothing on their devices to be excited about. I felt sad when they leave LA Market because I really wanted to get the XZ3, now I'm happy as fuck with the s10 and its performance.

I wish sony made it a bit smaller like 5.8"
158mm for the height is still tall for me. Maybe i'll wait for the xperia 1 and 5 size comparison.

To me, everything above 140 mm is too tall to be defined compact

The Xperia 5 is inferior to the P30 in far too many ways.

The P30 is a gigantic 1 cm shorter and so many can **use it one handed**, **has the 3.5" jack**, has a better camera, has slightly more display surface **and** is ~200 EUR cheaper.

Most of Xperia 5's advantages are moot: SDM855 (can't tell the difference vs Krin 980 which makes the P30 feel buttery smooth in literally any task), IP68 (haven't needed this once in my life) and built-in microSD reader (vs NM card reader; at 128 GB of internal storage, this not really a problem even if you want to use your phone as a card reader because all phones I've encountered so far have very low I/O performance on their built-in readers so it's far better to use a small USB-C OTG external reader anyway).

The only clear advantages Xperia 5 has are: OIS on the main camera (P30 has it only on the telephoto cam but still takes amazing photos on the main cam) and, I presume, a notification led, which Huawei ***WITH IMMENSE STUPIDITY*** failed to include.

Sure, the P30 may fall out of software support sooner if the commercial war between US and CN escalates but this is extremely unlikely to affect existing products.

The P30 will blow you away with its exquisite hardware and style (the black one) and extremely snappy software, that is blissfully free of Facebook, Twitter and all the other proven US spyware, while Huawei's spyware either is not there, works without asking you a thing or, much more likely, is just fully avoidable (you don't need a Huawei account and you don't need any of Huawei's apps which you can either uninstall or disable).

The Xperia 5 stands no chance against the P30.

Honestly I know everyone hates on Sony now but they still make the only handsets that check my boxes and they support the open source community. I love their simple designs and the new form factor isn't too bad at all. Glad the camera is damn good now too. They are getting better and they release updates faster than any of manufacturer besides google and maybe essential. People seem to forget that about them. This will probably be my next phone after the price goes down a bit.

Sony remain Sony ... the worse handphone configuration maker . selling chipset to cover handphone loses. no meaning.
even 4000mah , i feel really not enough juice in sometimes , i wonder why Sony until to date still wanna cheat money from spec . HTC its die bcoz always cheat on spec and low battery life.
it's that no phone call , data , GPS driving for those buy flagship phone user ?

In one of the photos it looks like the red Xperia is having active cooling fan :-o

I guess there are still some releasing half year old hw.

Shui8, 05 Sep 2019Those camera image output....still lacks Auto-HDR. Look at ... moreAt least the first shot with the wide angle lens have some sort of HDR applied.
And almost all of the images were taken "into the Sun" (maybe deliberately, maybe accidentally, i can't say), there's even one with the Sun in the frame. Even the human eye and professional cameras struggle with that kind of high contrast scenes, not to mention the tiny sensors in phones.

A lovely 5.7 incher with 3000 mAh battery and same specs and 150 euro cheaper than this would make a perfect X1 compact, not to mention the confusing name. Why not simply X1c or similar? SONY is changing its naming policy too often - looking for the correct one...looking for the correct market position as well.
