Nokia N8 preview: First look

05 October 2010
We were almost starting to suspect mobile phones of giving up and playing soft. They seemed unstoppable you know. They went from 5 to 12 in no time and there was nothing to suggest that digicams will ever get a timeout for a much needed breather...

My first approach at the N8 was with a very sceptical view. Smart phones are about speed and usability. I can honestly say after a couple of hours use I can see that the N8 is streets behind phones like the iPhone 4, Htc Desire and Samsung Galaxy S.
The best bits of the N8 are the media functions. The 12mega pixel picture quality is second to none, sound reproduction is clear and loud. But the operating system makes accessing these features quickly a nightmare, because its simply just to slow to navigate smoothly. Despite the operating system, the phone feels like a quality, solid build in your hand and is designed to last, but will the software will not catch up. Nokia need to consider a different operating system at some point, but you won't see it in this device.

You cannot just drag S^3 home screen (as in other OS) yet; because of this, you may think that S^3 is slower. However, if you try tapping the 3 dots repeatedly, you'll see that the switching of S^3 homes screen is instantaneous. In other words, S^3 is as responsive as other mobile OS.

*There is a benefit to this; it makes it easier to use horizontal scrollable widgets.

Because each home screen has a different wallpaper, when you change from one home screen to another, the transition will not appear as smooth and quick -- as the OS that use the (more or less) same wallpaper for every single page.

Try changing the wallpaper of every home screen to the same image (and better yet just plain black image) and making sure the N8 you're playing with has all the latest updates, you'll see that S^3 is not slower than Android.

I just played with an N8 in a shop, honestly, it has nice specs but the UI is truly less than average compared to the Galaxy S or even a Windows 7 phone. Sluggish and outdated. I'm a Nokia huge fan, but I have to admit that there is better elsewhere.

                              N8 first hand.

Before buying one of these just try it in a shop against a 1Ghz processor rival. If you're after a good camera, don't worry about mega pixels too much because on your phone screen and facebook page, it won't in the end, make any difference.
Sorry Nokia, I've passed this time.
